Entry 1
I met an interesting person today. Even though his voice has gone raspy and soft over the years of lecturing in large halls and has difficulty hitting the high notes, I'm sure he could do it when he was younger. It had me wondering if I would be like that someday, of course I could never play the guitar that well as he did.
He told me he learned to play because a roommate taught him, then he self taught himself. Which is hard because at some point I tried doing that with some instrument, I can't really recall but that's besides the point. You could see the veins and the reptile like skin on the back of his hand as he plucked at the cords, weaving a familiar melody out of thin air. After he finished he then held it like it was something dear to his heart. The case wasn't dusty, neither was the guitar even when he said he hadn't played in a while. I'm sure it was an important possession of his.
He told me how he would learn songs from people, connect that song to a person and remember them. He told me how he now has around 300 songs collected through the years. Amazing how that is. And every time he plays, he remembers them. There's this sentimental value in the songs and the guitar that I can't fathom. But my heart swelled in that odd way where I felt a twinge of sadness... because how many people have come and gone since he has collected them? I still don't understand why it brought tears to my eyes.
I learned a bit about myself today. That I like listening. Perhaps that's just a thing that resulted from my blunder about not listening. Sure, I'll forget it tomorrow but it's nice knowing a person. Everyone is different, they come from a background, a culture you will never experience and that shapes who they are.
I wonder if I can do that as well. Learn a song for everyone. Will that help me remember them just a bit more?
What am I even saying? That's impossible isn't it?
