Mother and son|| a WROEF fanfic
Every sense Sanjay died, Lewis was quieter. He wasn’t talking as much as he used to before, he hasn’t shared his opinions that much, and if you tried to talk to him too much he’d just leave without a word. Dawn would kill to hear her oldest son having a conversation with anybody again.
She wasn’t as close to him as her husband was, and that was the thought that kept her awake for nights. “What if he doesn’t trust me?” “What if he thinks that I’m a bad mom?”. She never talked to him about her feelings that much, and that’s because she was scared that they’d make him feel uncomfortable.
A year later, Milton disappeared. Some might say that he ran away, some might say that he got lost... after all, the Finches were known for their misfortune. Dawn searched a few months, believing that her son is still alive, but Lewis wasn’t much of an optimist person. “What if he’s dead, mom?” He asked her one day, as she was copying some more “Missing” posters.
“What?” she turned around, surprised to see that Lewis is finally talking to her.
“It’s been a long time. We’ve searched in so many places.” Lewis said. “It’s been almost a year and a half! If we find him, he’s probably dea-”
“Shut the fuck up, Lewis!” She yelled at him, with anger in her voice and tears in her eyes. “Just shut up!”
She couldn't control her emotions.
“Just do everyone a favor and shut up!”
Lewis nodded and went over to his room, quietly.
Dawn, who just realized what she has just said, ran after him, trying to apologize, but he didn’t listen. He just closed the door to his room, not allowing anyone to get in.
----
A few years went by. Lewis became a high school graduate, but instead of finding a job, he did the thing he was good at- not leaving the room, smoking drugs, practicing the guitar and playing video games.
Dawn grew sick of it. She couldn’t be the only working person in this family and he was a grown man. She decided to get him a job at the closest cannery, even though Lewis hated fish.
“Lewis, try to sleep early tonight.” She told him.
“Why?” Lewis asked, rolling himself another cigar.
“I got you a job!” she said.
“What?” he asked. “Without asking me?”
“Honey, you would’ve said ‘no’ if I’d ask you,” she said.
“Mom, I’m a grown man!” he said, trying to remain calm. “It better be at a good place.”
“Does the cannery counts as a good place?” she asked.
“Mom. What the fuck?” he asked, almost losing his self-control. “you know I hate fish!”
“I know, I know, but this is the closest workplace that would hire you without you having to go to a university!” she said. “I do it because I know what’s best for you, you know!”
At that moment, Lewis smiled. But not an understanding smile. Not a sad smile. It was an angry smile.
“YOU know what’s good for ME?” He asked. “Give me one good example for a time that your choices did something good for my life. And no. The therapy was Edie’s idea. Not yours.”
Dawn remained silent.
“All these times when you chose to remain sleeping while dad was taking care of me... The time that you told me to do a favor and shut up even though I was bearly talking... Getting me a job at a place I hate without asking me...” He said as tears are showing up in his eyes. “You’re probably thinking that I should’ve been the one who went missing instead of Milton, are you?”
He sighed.
“Lewis...” She began talking, but he cut her off.
“That’s okay. I would think the same way if I was you.” He said, and with that, he went inside his room.
----
A few years went by. Lewis still hated his job, but he kept all the complaints to his therapist. He met two friends there- The Jayiung twins, Mayson and Anna. but as time goes by, Lewis mind began to wonder. He was daydreaming, he didn’t speak to anybody... Anna took it as if he hates them, but Mayson tried to talk to him every day and even brought him food.
At one point, Lewis forgot to come back home. When Dawn tried to talk to him, he was still quiet, as if she wasn’t there. A few hours later she gets a phone call.
“Hello?” She asked.
“You’re Lewis’ mom, right?” The voice on the other line said with a broken and panicked voice.
“Yes. Who is it?” she asked.
“Mayson.” He answered. “I’m a friend and a co-worker of your son, but it doesn’t matter now. You have to come!”
“What happened?” she asked, worried.
“So I forgot something at the cannery and when I can back I saw Lewis... He used the fish cutter to chop his head off...” he began sobbing. “I already called the police. I...I’m so sorry...”
For a few moments that felt like an eternity, Dawn felt the storm inside her heart. Guilt, pain, fear, grief, anger... she wanted to scream, but nothing came out of her throat.
Her son just died, and she never proved to him that she can be the mom he wanted her to be. She disappointed him, she disappointed Sanjay, she disappointed Edith, she disappointed Milton... she disappointed everyone.
“Mrs. Finch?” Mayson’s voice from the other side of the line brought her back to reality.
“I’m on my way, Mayson. Don’t worry.” she said. “And you can call me Dawn.”
“O-okay, Mrs. Fi- I mean Dawn.” he said. “I’m so sorry, I really wanted to stop him but I was too slow and-”
“It’s not your fault, Mayson.” She said.
She hung up the phone, rushing over to the cannery. On the way, she called Edie and told her what happened. Another Finch fell a victim to the family curse.
She came into the cannery at the same time the cops came.
“My son...” She said as soon as she saw Lewis’s disconnected head. She sat on the floor, crying.
Mayson put his hand on her shoulder, and by the look on his face, he was crying this whole time.
Lewis was gone.
And she never got the chance to apologize.
---
Edith and dawn began packing as soon as they came back from the funeral, ending up leaving everything behind.
Edie? Died the day after they left.
Mayson? Died in a car accident a day after Lewis’s funeral.
Anna? Moved away.
It seems like so many people they knew were leaving.
And quickly, Dawn got sick.
As she was lying on her bed in the hospital, breathing with the help of medical technology, she could’ve sworn that her little brother Gus came to her.
“You coming, sis?” he asked. “You’ve been out there for too long!”
She smiled, knowing that this is the end.
“Come on, Gus,” she said with her final breath. “Let’s go home. The family’s waiting for us.”.
---
The afterlife world looked like an exact copy of the house.
She hugged Gus and greeted the others. After meeting most of them, she went upstairs to her room, where she saw her love, Sanjay, sitting on the bed, watching both of their sons, Milton and Lewis, sleeping.
She ran quickly over to the bed, pulling the three of them into a huge hug (Waking both Lewis and Milton up on the way) and cried of happiness. She missed these dorks so much, and she finally has the chance to apologize to them for the disappointment she thought she was.
“I missed you guys so much.” she said between the sobbing.
“Same here.” Sanjay said and Milton nodded.
“Sorry I was a little bit over emotional back then,” Lewis said. “I mean, shit, I guess I should’ve-”
she hugged her older son tighter.
“Shut up and get a hug, you dork.” she said.
“You’re great, mom.” he said, smiling and hugging her.
Suddenly, death didn’t seem so bad after all.
Baby Brother||WROEF fanfiction (Warning: child’s death)
Gus Finch wasn’t much of a happy kid. His parents never stopped arguing, his older sister, Dawn, was annoying and he didn’t have any friends at school. It was rare to see him smiling or laughing or being happy in general.
When Kay and Sam told the two siblings that they’re going to have another baby, it was a surprise to see Gus smiling from ear to ear, jumping in excitement and crying of happiness. Dawn didn’t like the idea of “sharing a room with two babies”, but Gus didn’t care.
“You do realize he’s going to die at some point, just like everyone in this family, right?” Dawn asked Gus one day as she watched her younger brother flying his kite.
“Don’t worry, Dawn,” Gus said. “I’m going to look after him.”
Dawn giggled.
“That’s also what grandma said about Aunt Molly, Aunt Barbara, Uncle Calvin... and they all died,” she said.
“She wasn’t there when any of them died.” Gus said.
“Exactly,” Dawn said. “As soon as you look away, he’s going to be in danger.”
Gus remained silence.
Both of them knew about the family course, and about the deaths in their family- From Ingeborg and Johan to Odin, to grandpa Sven and to their uncles.
They both knew that they might be the next in line, and talked about it a lot. They didn’t really care about the course, but when Dawn told Gus that their new brother might die, Gus felt... scared.
Dawn, realizing that Gus was anxious, apologized immediately and left him alone with his kite.
---
When Gregory was born, Gus sat next to his mother’s hospital bed, looking at his sleeping newborn brother.
“What’s his name?” Dawn asked, leaning against the wall.
“Gregory.” Kay said, smiling at the new human being that she held.
“He’s beautiful.” Gus said, smiling and fighting his tears.
“Yeah.” Sam said.
As soon as Gregory opened his eyes, he held Gus’s finger with his tiny hand, looked at him with his ocean-blue eyes and smiled. Gus almost cried at that moment.
“He seems to like you, Gus.” Kay said, giggling.
“I must protect him.” Gus whispered to himself, which caused the rest of his family to laugh.
“Did you kids found him any toys?” Sam asked.
“Well...” Gus said. “While my nerdy sister was busy doing her homework, Grandma and I bought him a lot of toys. Most of them are sea creatures themed, but I guess they’re cool enough.”
“Don’t call me a nerd, weirdo.” Dawn said angrily.
“Let’s not fight in front of Gregory, nerd.” Gus said.
Gregory laughed a little, which made Gus feel like his heart is melting.
“See?” he told her. “He also thinks that you’re a nerd, Dawn.”
His sister rolled her eyes as Sam giggled.
---
Gus became happier with Gregory around.
Every time he came back crying from school or feeling anxious, he picked up Gregory and played with him, or just laid on his bed and hugging the little baby.
One time, when Edie heard sounds coming from the kitchen, she found Gus messing up the kitchen only to warm up a bottle of milk for Gregory. She taught him how to do that and helped him clean up the mess. It reminded her of the days when Barbara took care of baby Walter.
Every night, Gus took Gregory to the laundry room, only to look at the night sky with him through the celling’s windows until the small child fell asleep in his arms.
“I promise I’ll always be there for you, Greg.” Gus told him every day. “I promise I’ll protect you. I promise that I won’t let anything bad happen to you.” Gregory always responded to him with babies' noises, such as “Ba” or “Ga” or “plrft”.
Dawn didn’t want to get too attached to him. She still believed that he’s going to die someday, just like the rest of the family. She thought Gus was Naive, which is pretty normal for a seven-year-old kid to be.
---
One day, as Gus was doing his homework (and by “doing his homework” we mean “Copied his homework from Dawn’s old notebooks), and Dawn was at her friend’s house, Kay was bathing Gregory.
Sometimes she left the bathroom to talk and argue with Sam on the phone for a few minutes, leaving Gregory in the bathtub with his toys.
After Gus finished his homework and played a little bit of “Final Fantasy VII” on his computer, he noticed that his mother has been arguing with his father for long and Gregory was alone for a long time. He decided to head to the pink bathroom to check on his baby brother, and as soon as he entered the room, he felt like his world was falling apart.
Gregory’s dead body floating in the bathtub, still holding his toy frog, with the rest of his toys floating around him.
He screamed and cried, calling out his little brother’s name knowing he won’t get any response.
Kay went into the bathroom to see what’s wrong, only to see her baby dead and her older son crying. She also began to cry and called her husband to tell him what happened.
Edie, who also heard the screaming and went to see what’s wrong, said that she’s going to bring Dawn back home and tell her what happened.
As soon as Sam came home, along with Edie and Dawn, he went to check on Kay as Edie called 911. Dawn went to check on Gus, who was already outside, flying his kite and crying.
“You were right, Dawn.” He said as soon as he saw her sitting next to him. “I couldn’t protect him.”
She hugged him, allowing him to cry loudly on her shoulder.
“I couldn’t keep my promises.” he sobbed, not even trying to fight his tears.
Dawn also began to cry. She had many reasons to cry.
She cried because she didn’t spend much time with Gregory,
She cried because of Kay wasn’t able to look him without leaving the room for so long,
She cried because Gregory died,
She cried because Sam didn’t know that his calls caused it,
She cried because Edie was busy cooking dinner instead of looking after him,
She cried because Gus had to watch his little brother, who was his only reason to smile, floating lifelessly in the bathtub, knowing he cannot help him.
“He was too young for the family course.” she said in a broken voice.
Both of them just sat there, mourning their baby brother.
---
Dawn moved on very quick, considering the fact that it was her brother who died, but Gus?
Gus never moved on.
He’d go out every morning to visit Gregory’s grave, Flying his kite in the noon, watch the stars through the laundry room’s celling’s windows at twilight while humming the lullaby Kay used to sing to Gregory and cried himself to sleep every night.
When Kay and Sam divorced, he begged his mother to stay, but she said that she couldn’t. That the memories of Gregory are everywhere in the house and she couldn’t take it.
“It’s my fault he’s dead.” she said.
“No, it’s not, mom!” Gus said. “It was dad’s fault! He was the one who called you every time! He’s the one who made you go out of the bathroom, leaving Gregory alone! It was HIS fault!”
He began to cry.
“It was also mine as well...” he said.
“Gus, It wasn’t your fault.” she said.
“Yes, it is!” he cried. “I promised Gregory that I won’t let anything bad happen to him, but I didn’t look after him in the shower, and when I came to check on him it was already too late!”
Kay hugged him, kissing him on his forehead.
“Gus, I can’t imagine how hard it is for you,” she said. “I wish I could stay to help you, but I can’t help you if I can’t help myself.”
Gus remained silent.
“I’m going to miss you, mom.” he said.
“I’m going to miss you too, sweety.” she said.
She took her suitcase, went to the front door, looked back at Gus, smiled a little bit and left the house, leaving Gus with his broken world.
Of course, it wasn’t her last time at the house, but this is for another story.

Happy Birthday Edith “Edie” Finch Sr. !! 🥳🔥
08/04/1917
The matriarch of the Finch family no doubt. She would’ve been 108 years old this year which really shows just how far the Finch family goes back. I’m not gonna lay any comments here but it’s safe to say that the Finches wouldn’t be who they were without her-
