MEET W SHANGHAI’S KAI MING WONG: “MOVE YOUR ASS AND JUST DO IT”

Kai Ming Wong is a Senior Creative Consultant at creative hot shop W Shanghai, and we are honoured to welcome him to the AD STARS Preliminary Jury for the third time.

With over 20 years of advertising experience in both Malaysia and China, Kai Ming Wong will soon be busy selecting this year’s AD STARS shortlist along with 240 other Preliminary Jurors. 

When he’s not judging awards, Wong is a Senior Creative Consultant at W Shanghai - a rule-breaking agency that’s also known as ‘Wild Dogs’ because it is constantly “searching for new paths we can carve into within the advertising industry”. 

In Malaysia, Wong worked at various agencies including DDB, Grey Kuala Lumpur, Naga DDB, LOWE Malaysia and some of Malaysia's top creative hot shops including Creative Juice\Kuala Lumpur (TBWA Group) and LUNCH Communications powered by Hakuhodo.

From here, he moved to China, joining agencies such as M&C Saatchi Shanghai, JWT Shanghai, Accenture Interactive Shanghai, We Are Social Shanghai, and now W Shanghai.

What do you love most about your role at W Shanghai?

I’m a Senior Creative Consultant at W Shanghai, working in a creative Hot Shop with a group of young talented people – this makes me keep young and fresh all the time.

What makes W Shanghai unique in your market? What are its strengths?

There are a new breed of creative Hot Shops challenging 4As agencies: W Shanghai is one of them.

How does living in Shanghai inspire you?

The opportunities are always out there: all you need to do is move your ass and just do it.

Do you think the pandemic will change the creative industry in any positive ways in China?

There are always pros and cons. People moving all meetings and discussions online – it seems more efficient, but I more prefer "face-to-face" connections.

What kind of kid were you: were you always ‘creative’ and breaking rules?

Kids teach us how imagination is simple: anything you can think of and how fun it can be presented. Creativity has taught me that life needs simplicity: organize the chaotic things in your mind and make them simple.

Outside of work, what are your passions?

I love sneakers, I love dogs, I love running, it keeps my mind empty, I just need to focus on one thing – RUN.

You are joining the Preliminary Jury at AD STARS 2021 for the third time! What do you enjoy most about judging AD STARS?

LOL! How I wish I can be one of the Final Judges for the next time so I can hunt the best ideas in the show.

Kai Ming Wong is one of 240 Preliminary Judges who will select the AD STARS 2021 shortlist, which will be announced on Friday 16th July.
