Thank you to AIA for awarding @mtaartsdesign the 2020 New York State Excelsior Award for #AnnHamilton’s poignant project “CHORUS” (2018) at the WTC Cortlandt (1) station, and for recognizing the efforts of so many to recover, rebuild, and enhance our vital transit system. The project’s success can be attributed to the work of multiple teams that coalesced to design and build this remarkable station. Along with artist Ann Hamilton, #MTAArts, @MTA New York City Transit architects, and the entire Construction and Development team, we thank the mosaic fabricator @mayerofmunich, the contractors and consultants of Judlau, Downtown Design Partnership, STV, and Domingo Gonzales Associates, who all worked together to re-build this subway station station with world-class art at its center.

Free and open to the public! Tomorrow night, artist Ann Hamilton will speak at Columbia University’s Lenfest Center for the Arts about her #MTAArts commissioned work “CHORUS”, a marble mosaic of text (fabricated by Mayer of Munich) from the Declaration of Independence and the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was recently installed at the WTC Cortlandt (1) station.

A collaboration between artist, artisans, and the MTA

A subway station mosaic made up of quotations from two foundational human-rights documents, CHORUS is a key piece in an ambitious public-transit public art program

With the re-opening of the WTC Cortlandt Street (1) station, MTA Arts & Design proudly presents “CHORUS” (2018), a new monochromatic marble mosaic by renowned artist Ann Hamilton, fabricated by Mayer of Munich. “CHORUS” marks the historic site below the former World Trade Center with a field of text in mosaic bas-relief, weaving the words from the US Declaration of Independence with the 1948 UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, meant to acknowledge the civic ideals and aspirations of humanity and society. The 4,350 square feet of white-on-white tactile surface invites subway riders to engage with the words as they touch the text, creating the opportunity for meaningful personal encounters.

This year, International Day of Peace marks the 70th anniversary of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is a featured source in the new WTC Cortlandt Street station art installation, “CHORUS” by Ann Hamilton. The words inspire us to continue on a path of peace in our local communities and beyond.

This year, Human Rights Day marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a milestone document that proclaimed the inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being -- regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. It is the most translated document in the world, available in more than 500 languages.
