the blonde’s breathless words could barely be heard over the madding crowd, people clinking glasses and dancing, smoke rising high into the new york city night, as city ellis grabbed ahold of her hand ( bottle of moonshine still in the other ) and set off full-pelt across the rooftop, cecilia barely able to keep pace with the friend she had come to rely on more and more over the past two weeks. they were friendly before, and fond of each other’s company, but city’s forthright way of solving problems seemed to be the only way to drag cecilia free from the quagmire of guilt she’d been sinking into that night; every time stevie’s saddened eyes caught her own and they were forced to confront the enormity of what she had done, it began again, and city — sighing heavily, usually punctuated with a damnit cecilia — came to pull her away.
but she hadn’t seen stevie, hadn’t seen the way the other girl looked at the star-speckled golden dress city had chosen over snapchat. after all, that was what ‘kind-of-dates’ did, right? so the sudden intervention was a complete surprise to the literary mystery, whose heart pounded at triple-time, “what— city!”
