hey. my friend who I do intermittent anime night with and I finished our last-seven-episodes sprint-to-the-end of Escaflowne today. rewatch for me, first time watch for them, and like, i thought i was prepared for it emotionally but. man. man it's just so good. what a good dang anime. i gotta talk about Escaflowne for a second lemme talk to you about Escaflowne.
so listen. listen. we all know about mech anime right? and we all know about the current isekai trend. Well what if I told you about the incredible 1996 anime The Vision of Escaflowne, which is an old-school isekai fantasy but also a sci-fi but also a mecha but also a shoujo romance but also an action anime about how war is bad. The isekai location is a second secret invisible moon that's behind our regular moon. There's a catgirl who's literally a cat who is a girl, yknow, like Izutsumi Dunmeshi. occasionally someone has wings, because it was the 90s. Sunrise made it in between Gundam Wing and Cowboy Bebop and Yoko Kanno did the music and sometimes the music is a church choir singing "Escaflowne" over and over and it's good.
and it's. beautiful?? it's so beautiful???? scenery and backgrounds like watercolor paintings. incredibly subtle facial expressions in key scenes. The way the animators treat light?? like how the whole color palette shifts because it's night or sunset or sunrise and it's so natural and effective. or dynamic lighting, or firelight. and the way they treat weight???? they gave the mech a cape for the aesthetic but they put ornate metal decorations on the bottom to weigh down the edges to justify why the cape magically never gets in the way during a mech fight. cape weights! are you hearing me. is this thing on. the world feels lived in. the characters feel like they exist in their environment. the subtleties of worldbuilding in the visual language are Horizon game franchise levels of making me feel feral. they designed the mech interiors with essentially fantasy rumble cages to keep the pilots from getting whiplash. when's the last time you saw a mecha anime that accounted for whiplash?? the main female character is a track team jock and her running posture is visibly different from other characters because of it. the central romance arc has scenes that are so good they make me want to eat gravel and gnaw off my own leg. are you listening to me
sorry my queue keeps running out and stuff over here, the graphic novel adaptation of The Raven Boys came out and so whenever I've been on tumblr I've been on my TRC sideblog and I keep forgetting about uhhh the rest of tumblr
i know I say this Every Year but like. What if THIS is the year that I finally write that second chapter of my ghost hunters AU fic
leorio birthday jumpscare gets me every year. every year. HOW?? it's not that long after my own birthday!!! I've been in this fandom for TEN YEARS!!!! YOU'D THINK I'D EXPECT IT!!!
Insane to me how Ging is basically like "well I don't really care about this election, but I do care about ruining Pariston's game of dragging out the election as long as possible... I know, I'm gonna piss off Gon's irritable friend and let him punch me in the face, given how many people I've pissed off over the years that'll definitely get him a bunch of votes and make this whole mess much more interesting." No wonder Cheadle finds him annoying.
I thought it would be funny to have someone in my TNG AU, let's say [spins wheel] Morel commenting that a planet landscape looks like Arizona, which would be a funny wink just for me because a lot of the outdoor footage in Star Trek (especially TOS) was filmed at locations around Southern California and the southwest in general. But then I realized that most of the other characters might not have ever seen the American Southwest, even with training at Starfleet Academy (which is in San Francisco aka northern California). Which makes it even funnier to me.
