in honor of finishing this beast 3 weeks ago here is a digital scrapbook of my materials and some behind the scenes

initial sketches for the art

Below is the 1 paragraph version of the dms i sent to @thehorsesthatareslow who had the misfortune of letting me bounce this idea off him. ( dms are separated by || so thats why there are 30 'so like's 💀)

ok so my evil mind came up w this last night after i had caught up on all the content on ao3 😔|| ok so like the trope that makes me want to die the most is like reincarnation/finding eachother in every life (😫😫😫) ok so like what if river spider enemies (sexual) in every lifetime over like a couple hundred years and one always dies before it gets like romantic || but the line that i created was “how many lifetimes until we get it right?” gonna kmsssss ||so like at the end coda (the modern era show timeline) spider doesnt die and they finally get to be together ||you are welcome || im going to make it seem like its a sad ending and then drop a final chapter where he comes back to life and everythings fine because its the 21st century and like medicine exists 😂

Originally chapter 4 was supposed to be 1666 The Great Fire of London but I moved it to the Gunpowder Plot for the espionage.

1600s spider is one of the bored crazy teenaged girls that started the salem witch trials (@manbeaft partially responsible for this idea dfkjgf)

ww2 (although i like to think that the turn-around has to be longer)

I also went on a giant rabbithole for the telegraph Roddy has in chapter 5 that ended up just being an offhand thing. Same thing happened with the Wire Repair in Chapter 6 where i read like 3 articles and several pages in a book on archive.org about trench telephone wires and wiretapping. Also went no where and ill never need the information again!

finally for this weird post: i went to Lewes today for brunch (Brewers Arms 😘😘😍🥰) and saluted our fallen chapter 2 spider🫡🫡chose a spot in the distance for him to have fictionally died :)

Chapter summary: “So,” River says, lighting and taking a drag from his own fag. “Am I allowed to ask why you’re here?” Webb looks at him and takes another puff; this time he exhales the smoke from his mouth and re-inhales it through his nostrils in a practiced fluidity. The smoke escapes his lips again when he sighs. “Allowed to ask, not allowed to know.”

However, with her status comes danger, so she needs protection. And there's only one place she trusts to keep her safe while keeping her shady dealings a secret…

River finishes his tea and fishes a cigarette case out of his breast pocket. He offers one to Webb who accepts quickly. River holds out a light and watches as Webb’s slender fingers hold the roll to the flame and then bring it to his mouth for a skillful puff. Some color returns to his face. “So,” River says, lighting and taking a drag from his own fag. “Am I allowed to ask why you’re here?”  Webb looks at him and takes another puff; this time he exhales the smoke from his mouth and re-inhales it through his nostrils in a practiced fluidity. “We should team up.” Is how it had begun. How they thought it had, at least. Putting words to something that had already started. And so it was together that they went through training. The lectures, the exams, the endurance courses. It was during one of the latter that their futures were discussed, as much as could be done at so young an age. The Black Mountains were not as formidable as their name suggested. Though in the dark, on a ridge, huddled in a rocky outcropping to escape the rain, the semantics of the landscape seemed unimportant. It was too cold and they were too rain-soaked to sleep, so they talked. Something neither of them had done, or felt allowed to, before. “What are we going to do after training?” River asked, shivering. The ‘we’ passing his lips as easily as the rest of the words. “Well I’ll move up the ranks, enough that I don’t need to do this shit anymore.” James grimaced and motioned into the darkness. “And then after ten or fifteen years I’ll go into politics or something.” The track was as uninspired in nature as it was in delivery. “We could be First and Second Desk.” River looked over, a boyish smile on his face. James mirrored the grin, “Yeah? And you’d be First I assume?”  River shrugged, “Nah, I’d be fine with Second. First is more you–all the politics and growing soft in your old age.” James elbowed him. “I will not grow soft in my old age, thank you very much.” He never fully retreated the arm that jabbed River’s, so there it remained, contact.  The conversation continued, so did the rain.

Chapter 7: 2017

Chapter summary:

It was inevitable, really, that when James Webb was asked to provide a target for the break-in to The Park, he chose River Cartwright.  At least it was to Diana Taverner, who set this plot in motion. She knew her ex-protégé, unable to resist, would fall back on his Achilles heel.  Not that Webb was ever an Achilles, though he no doubt fancied himself on that level. And what then of Patroclus? And what did this subconscious analogy portend for their fates? Diana Taverner pondered this only fleetingly.  And James Webb, well, was blissfully unaware.
