In the middle of a day------& by day, you know that means everything------so, in the middle of everything (bills, classes, lunch, exhaustion, here to there, there to here, outside, inside, off away & back again) I find the chain, tangled, on my desk. 2 of them, to be exact: a chain & a black string necklace. They are clutching each other. I think: It will only take a minute. I sit & begin to pull, pluck, pull. My fingers work without my mind, pull, pause, pull. The chain seems to give, then snags. Light sharpens. Quiet heightens. I am only this task. This task is my only. I feel my weight, my breath. Hush. In one thin moment, it unloops, unspools, releases into two necklaces. I am almost sorry.
