I wanted to post these details time ago. But I completely forgot it... Black-Cat and White-Lioness starring 'Little Red Riding Hood'. Dragon Poison as 'The Wolf'.
This week I appear on the podcast Game On Girl, a weekly podcast hosted by Regina McMenomy, Ph.D., and Rhonda Oglesby. While the show focuses on gaming culture and representation, my visit centered on fandom, the reasons behind franchises dismissing their female fans, and the importance of speaking up as fans and customers. We also talked about storytelling and smashing tropes, one of my favorite pastimes when working on my novels.
Speaking of Wynde, it did get a little air time, as did its main protagonist Vespa. She is a princess of sorts, perhaps a spoiled one. It’s what she does in the gravest hour of need for the people of her homeworld that turns the princess into a heroine.
The big discussion of the hour was on defining the term strong female character. Then we tackled how objectification and agency are separate issues when considering the portrayal of women in stories.
It was a fantastic conversation from start to finish. I look forward to meeting up with Regina and Rhonda at GeekGirlCon later this year. From the show notes for Episode 123:
Have we got a great show for you this week! Tricia Barr from FANgirl Blog joins us. We discuss Star Wars fandom, strong female characters, and writing. Check out the episode and let us know what you think in the comments.
You can find Game on Girl on iTunes or the RSS Feed!
Tricia Barr took her understanding of brand management and marketing, mixed it with a love of genre storytelling, and added a dash of social media flare to create FANgirl Blog, where she discusses Star Wars, fandom, and strong female characters. She also writes about Star Wars for Random House’s science fiction and fantasy blog Suvudu.com and Star Wars Insider magazine and is a contributor for Her Universe’s Year of the Fangirl. Her FANgirl opinions can be heard on the podcasts Assembly of Geeks and RebelForce Radio Presents Fangirls Going Rogue.
Tricia Barr’s novel, Wynde, won the 2014 Independent Publisher Book Award Gold Medal for Best Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror Ebook. She was also part of Silence in the Library’s successful all-female creator science fiction and fantasy anthology Athena’s Daughters, which is available now. For excerpts and tales of her adventures in creating a fictional universe, hop over to TriciaBarr.com.

Another Five Star review this month at Amazon for my novel Wynde.
I got so involved in this book I couldn’t put it down. The characters are great, the story is exciting. There is so much to this story I will have to read it again to make sure I got it all
Always great to hear. If you missed the Facebook Launch Party for Gail Z. Martin’s Deadly Curiosities that I mentioned in the last Wynde Around the Web, stop by and check out the discussion and giveaways from some notable science fiction and fantasy authors. I whipped up a discussion on favorite space opera tales and there was a conversation about dealing with the elusive muse, plus much more.
One exciting thing I talked about at that event was the upcoming artwork for Wynde. I am working with the amazingly talented artist Magali Villenueve. Star Wars fans will be familiar with her work from Star Wars Insider and recent RPG books. She also works on Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings. Last year I interviewed her for the artwork she did to promote Razor’s Edge.

As mentioned previously, I will be a guest at ConGregate in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, from July 11-13. Here is my full schedule. Last week I talked about my exciting Saturday schedule. Sunday’s schedule will provide another new experience as I get to do my first reading from my novel Wynde. From there, I dash to a panel with the fabulous team from Athena’s Daughters. Later I moderate my second panel, which may or may not touch on a Star Wars favorite: the Empire.

Imperial March

Why are they always Galactic Empires? Why not republics, democracies and confederacies? Why do we assume that the future government is going to be some autocracy from the past? Is the Galactic Empire more romantic or just easier to write?

In case you missed it, my novel Wynde won the Gold Medal for Best Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror Ebook in the 2014 Independent Publisher Book Awards! I’ve got my medal and shiny gold medal stickers for the book covers. Even more important than awards is some of the great feedback from readers. Thanks to everyone who takes a moment to share your thoughts. Feedback and reviews are an author’s lifeblood.
Just a reminder: here are all the things you can do to support my novel. One of the ways is to write a review on Amazon, which Twitter user @MediocreJedi did. He gave Wynde five stars. Here’s what he had to say:
I found Tricia Barr’s “Wynde” to be an exciting page-turner from the start. The action only lets up in a few places, and that’s mainly due to working in additional necessary political intrigue and machinations. The author does a masterful job of describing military, aviation, and space combat situations in such a manner as to paint the reader right into the middle of it. Many of the characters also exhibit realistic psychological depth as a result of their experiences, too, and as a combat veteran I could relate to their thoughts.
If you’re a fan of Star Wars (and the Expanded Universe), you’ll definitely warm up to many of the characters in this book. Though the story mainly revolves around the young and brash Vespa Wynde, the supporting characters are all well-fleshed-out. I found myself identifying with or appreciating specific qualities many of them in particular ways – the self-assured attitude of one, the skills of another, the mystical qualities of yet another, etc.
Not only did he give Wynde a great review, @MediocreJedi placed it in his Little Library with an awesome plug on top!
