A statement on why you would like to take part in the programme and how you would aim to respond to the theme of The Multiverse (max 500 words) *
I visited Wysing last year on a trip with uni and I found the location beautiful and it was great to see what can be done in the space, like the wooden amphitheater, Amphis (an artwork for safety reasons) made from saved wood. I’ve been checking your website regularly, and the amount of diversity you have included in your shows and programs will really benefit me, getting to work with entirely new people who work in different mediums in different ways. Such as Electra who foster new artists and ideas, like, A few stories in the shape of abstract objects, Francesco Pedraglio, 2011.
I also saw what a great setting it is and got a sense of a good community spirit, which I aim for at uni by talking and working with many students across courses and year groups. I am very socially active at uni being a student rep for two years and recently getting a Green party member in to talk.
It would be fantastic to work with the idea of a ‘Multiverse’ over summer. I’ve had experience with the theme last summer in hosting a gaming night and weekend to immerse members of the public into the rule riddled world we (a youth art collective) had created based on Northampton’s folklore, there were 5 ongoing role playing games on the opening night.
We also organized a dress up workshop to transform members of the public into machines as part of a cabaret night on the summer solstice last year.
Through my own work, I have been creating self-imposed restrictions and with this opportunity to meet new people I’m looking to construct parameters for them. I want to pull Wysing from 9 miles east of Cambridge and plunge it straight into instability, confusion and eventually, perhaps, understanding.
Another artist and I did a talk ‘Questions on Existentialism’, we created an intervention in the space and created a sense of oddity by questioning why we do anything and guiding the audience to be walls, houses and continents; all while staring at blankets.<see documentation>
Good conversation will be created by bringing the idea of intervention directly into the Wysing scene.
I have expanded a range of useful skills by helping set up many events in the past, ranging from a spring show at the University of Northampton, working with international artists, talking in European art conferences to being commissioned by local galleries.
For the spring show I worked as part of the advertising team and we managed to get more than a hundred people in for the opening night. For my piece in the show I worked collaboratively with another student to make a performative video installation where we both struggled to power up a projector using bike generators to show a film of us biking through a swamp. I created costumes as protection against the rigors of the environment (see website: Tyred)
