WYSTIC

Poor Wystic’s development has been a rollercoaster. He started out as an Endless Forest (it’s a cool game check it out) AU for JW. Then he split off into some kind of god past life. Then I decided that was really fucking stupid and he became a totally different character in a completely different setting called Zahaho.

He got a makeover and his own unique face.

Then people started calling him a llama and it gave me some serious bad feels in my skills as a character designer so he was trashed for a while. Then I brought him back in a different, headless form as this fucked up windego/skinwalker/faerie thing.

That didn’t last long, but I’m going to keep that idea and work it into this new character named Leroy.

Then I decided FUCK IT I’MA DO WHAT I WANT and brought him back in all his blue, six-legged, asshole glory. He is the villain of a story featuring a teacher named Roark and his town. He’s ALWAYS been an asshole though, no matter what stage of development he was in.

Wystic writing snippet.

You had to be a special kind of angry to kill a god.

Roark's wife had given birth to a sheep and he knew there was only one thing that could have caused it. He put his pipe out, pulled on his coat, and stepped out into the rain. His gun rested in a small tin shed along side fishing poles, old buckets, and specimins in glass he used in his classes. He picked it up, peered into the barrel and put it over one shoulder.

He was going to kill Wystic if it was the last thing he did.

The trees thundered all around him as he walked on the road's shoulder. The ditches stirred with insects and mud and minnows and his stomach boiled with a white hot anger. The rain was the only thing that kept it from overflowing and killing him. Roark could not remember ever being so angry. He had been angry for a long time and he supposed it was a fate kind of thing that kept him from becoming this angry too soon.

You had to be a special kind of angry to kill a god.

It was the only thing the people of Zawaho county knew to call it. It wasn't a Bigfoot or a booger or a ghost. It wasn't a pickstie or a ghost. Old Scratch had nothing on it. It was some old, raw, angry thing left over from when men didn't use words. Roark was the youngest man in the county to have seen it.

Visions of Wystic were usually shared by old men at the Eat place up next to the highway where you turned off to go to the blueberry farm. The men who talked about Wystic were so old that even the women who grew up blessing hearts and praying to Jesus didn't object. They never would admit it to their pastor and babies, but most feared that the Lord didn't know what to do with Wystic either.

Roark wished he'd put on socks before pulling on his boots. He wished he'd kissed Misty goodbye before he left. He even wished he'd kissed the reed-legged little lamb that slept between them goodbye. Clover might have been a sin against God himself, but she was family.

A truck pulled up along side him and rolled down its window. Aaron Mickey lived two houses down from Roark and he'd been putting out the garbage when he saw him set out with the 22 on his back. It was enough to make a man wonder and he had climbed into his Chevy and followed the teacher for a good three miles.

Roark taught his grandkids and it was only natural to worry. He wasn't a bad neighbor either.

"Thannan, you okay?"

Roark Thannan stopped and pulled his glasses off so that he could wipe them on his shirt. "I am fine but Misty is not."

His accent was thick and he spoke with a humm in his hooked nose. The kids liked it. They thought he sounded funny and they loved to hear him prounoucne the longer names of lizards and insects, but talking to men his own age or twice it lit up a little self-conscious flame in him. It made him different. He could dress like other people, buy all the iPods and laptops and get Direct TV, but his words betrayed him every time.

Stranger.

"Oh," said Aaron Mickey. He fumbled with the cover on his steering wheel and said nothing for a long minute. Everyone knew about the Thannan girl. If you could call it that. It was something everyone knew and nobody talked about because it would attract big black vans with camears on top and nobody in Zawaho or Hawksaw wanted that. There was a reason little Mississppi nowhere towns were nowhere towns. There was a reason nobody ever got a clear shot of Bigfoot.

It would ruin things.

"Well what'r you doin way out here? Need a lift?"

Roark shook his head. "I am going to kill Wystic today."

Aaron Mickey's boot almost slipped off the break and sent his truck lurching forward. He leaned his head out the window and stared at the shorter man's face with wide, worried eyes. All the wrinkles had been scared off of him. "You mean t' what? Boy, you can't go out and kill-- get in this truck, I'm takin' you home."

The teacher shook his head and started walking. "No."

"What am I supposed to tell Misty? You can't just walk off, you got a two-week old!"

"I am going to come back and I am going to have that thing's...heart in my hands."

Roark would have loved to lop the beast's head off and carry it home for everyone to see, but Wystic didn't have one. Every one who had seen it had described it as a kind of hump-backed deer with no head and a pair of burdon legs hanging off one shoulder.

People said there were headless deer in the woods and they had said it for years, but none of those road-accident borne creatures did what the Wystic did. The headless, wanting deer made people and animals feel empty and ill. They ruined crops and drained wells and killed babies in their cribs just by walking between the houses.

And they were rare.

They didn't turn bolts of fabric into mice. They didn't turn cattle to stone or milk to oil or babies into sheep. That was all the Wystic's doing and over the years, even setting milk out for the headless tyrant wasn't good enough. People didn't have enough gold to spread around. Animal sacrifice was a step too far back into the hot jungles for Zawaho.

When Roark reached the gas station, he leaned himself against the side of the building and panted. He wasn't an old man. Maybe halfway through his thirties. However he didn't make a habit of trecking around on foot when he could drive. Wystic wasn't something you could cruise around and shoot at though. You had to go after it on foot.

WEIRD DREAM

I napped after watching Ashley draw and I dreamed that shydog, Jeih, Morri, and Wystic were all babies and were being carried around by this momma wolf that was grey and black but they were all tied to her legs  like baby cloth coccoons. And she was just walkin down the street with all these babies on her legs like those power weights you see at the store.

Yup.
