Research paints healthy picture for music tourism
UK Music’s flagship research report, Wish You Were Here which tracks music tourism (i.e. people travelling to attend concerts and festivals) has been released and it shows a healthy picture for live music generally with a 12% rise in audiences at live events across the country, that people were willing to travel for longer to attend music events.
The total direct and indirect spend generated by the 12.5 million music tourists is £4 billion. This in turn sustains over 47,000 jobs.
However, the research also revealed that grassroots and small music venues have seen a sharp drop in the amount spent at venues. In 2016 some £202 million was spent in small venues, down 13%. This surely reinforces the Music Venue Trust’s calls for additional financial support for grassroots music venue sector.
