As she approached him at the bar, he couldn’t believe his eyes. The photos she’d sent didn’t do her justice. She was gorgeous. She moved effortlessly through the room; her long limbs and sleek body almost swayed to a silent rhythm. He wracked his brain, trying to find a word for how she looked… svelte. That was it. A cheesy, but fitting word he’d only read on amateur writer’s tumblr blogs. Her body was svelte: gracefully slender and lithe.
Their greeting was warm. The brief touch as they hugged confirmed his suspicions. She felt soft and smelt amazing. Her smile made her eyes glow with a twinkle of mischief. He was mesmerised by her physicality.
As the conversation warmed and wore on, he did notice something. Or rather, the lack of it. Nothing was particularly wrong, but nothing was particularly right, either. Physically, he found her attractive, but mentally there was no spark. He wondered how she felt.
Out of the blue, she said, “You feel it too, don’t you?”
“I… I’m not sure what you mean?” He stammered, genuinely surprised by her question, and hoping she wasn’t wanting what he couldn’t give.
“Oh, I think you do. You and me. It’s not there, is it?” She smiled sadly. Sighing, he nodded. Relieved and disappointed.
They finished their conversation with a friendly hug. She even kissed him softly on the cheek. All he felt was friendship. They parted ways and drove into the night alone.
