As a Black Womban artist, I acknowledge and honour Black womben who inspire me and have mentor/teach me about the place of #love in my artistic practice. Today, I acknowledge @dbiyounganitafrika, whom I have followed since 2010. As the ancestors would have it, I finally had the honour to meet d’bi during an unexpected trip to Zimbabwe. Having linked in with my artist community there, @batsiraichigama invited me to attend d’bi’s SORPLUSI METHOD workshop. That morning workshop was a dream come true as I’ve been trying for years to find a way to make it to her Anita Afrika Artist retreats. The few days with d’bi in Zimbabwe were magical, to say the least. While in Harare as a guest with the @bookcafe_harare, she presented on a panel with #Xapa (who inspired me to write, ‘God Is A Black Womban’). @cynthiamarang (whose work on Shona spirituality and Black female messianic figures gives me life) chaired the talk where d’bi and Xapa contemplated the role of the Artist-Shaman and @batsiraichigama (whose poetry gives me life) organised. I’m looking forward to linking up with d’bi again this year and taking the work deeper. Give thanks for those who create paths for us where none existed before.
