Hangar Photo Art Center In September,  welcomes the work of 13 photographers for the exhibition "Des oiseaux". 👀 Today we zoom in on the Spanish duo Albarran Cabrera, formed by Angel Albarrán and Anna Cabrera. 🇪🇸 Their work makes you perceive the world in a completely different way: "being conscious of our surroundings isn't just an important part of life – our surroundings and how we interpret them is life as we know it."

From the publisher: "On 14 January 1958, the disfigured and amputated body of a man was discovered near Lake Sembako in Japan. Two investigators from Tokyo came to help out the local police in order to resolve what at first appeared to be a banal case, but which proved to be more complex. For the first time, a photographer was authorised to accompany the police to document the investigation. Watabe followed the inspector as he questioned witnesses (workers in a tannery factory, local police officers etc.) and pounded the streets of the most insalubrious neighbourhoods in Tokyo--its bars, bridges, alleyways and hospitals--in search of the killer. Watabe's images record much more than simply a police investigation, they reveal Tokyo in the 1950s in a way that has rarely been shown."

Décès du grand éditeur de livres photographiques Xavier Barral

Le monde de l’édition et de la photographie a appris la triste nouvelle de la disparition de Xavier Barral à l’âge de 63 ans samedi dernier à Paris. Né le 22 novembre 1955, le fondateur de la maison d’édition du même nom a étudié à l’École supérieur d’arts graphiques Penninghen où il rencontre Robert Doisneau et le graphiste Roman Cieslewicz. Ce passionné de voile et d’océan se lance ensuite dans la photographie de presse avant de prendre la direction artistique de plusieurs magazines (L’évènement du jeudi, Impact médecin, l’Autre journal). Grâce à l’éditeur Éric Hazan il intègre vraiment le monde de l’édition de livres d’art puisqu’il s’occupera de l’édition d’un livre photo…de Robert Doisneau puis d’un ouvrage d’Eugène Atget. Parallèlement, au sein de l’agence Atalante qu’il fonde avec Annette Lucas et Stéphane Trapier, il crée tout un univers graphique, une identité visuelle pour des clients prestigieux comme la Cour des comptes, la Cité de la musique, l’Opéra de Paris, la Fondation Cartier, le BAL ou Radio classique. En 2002, sous l’impulsion de l’éditeur Hervé de La Martinière et de Xavier Buren  (peintre et sculpteur), décide de franchir le pas en fondant sa propre maison d’édition, les Éditions Xavier Barral.  

La réussite est au rendez-vous pour cet amateur du beau nourri d’une solide expérience dans le graphisme, la composition visuelle et le monde de l’édition et de l’art. Au rythme de quatorze livres parus par an, cet éditeur, vite devenu incontournable, cumule les succès avec « M’as-tu vue » de Sophie Calle (2003), les ouvrages du photographe chilien Sergio Larrain, une rétrospective de Paris photo avec une soixantaine de contributions prestigieuses en 2016, un livre mémorable sur le photographe Masahisa Fukaze et un livre de Depardon sur les USA (2018). Infatigable artisan de l’esthétique et du produit bien fait, Xavier Barral était aussi un explorateur à sa manière puisqu’il a su sortir du strict domaine  des photographes pour s’aventurer dans  l’exploration spatiale avec son livre « Mars, une exploration photographique » (de Francis Rocard et Alfred.S.McEwen), l’archéologie avec « Chauvet-Pont-d’arc, l’in appropriable »(de Raphaël Dallaporta), la génétique avec « Évolution » (de Patrick Gries et Jean-Baptiste de Panafieu) ou la géopolitique avec un ouvrage sur le mur de séparation entre la Palestine et Israël, « Wall » de Josef Koudelka.

Sergio Larrain’s magnum opus gets a reedition featuring his own unpublished layout, handwritten notes, letters and drawings. This new version also includes several photographs absent from the original release back in 1991. Judging by its thickness alone, this might well be a different book!

Winner of the 2016 Nadar Prize, this is Patrick Zachmann’s homage to a country he spent over 30 years photographing. There are loads to see here - tons of pictures punctuated with written entries made during his travels. Also, its smallish size lends to a personal kind of reading experience.
