Nothing Is Ever Easy
Daryl felt numb inside. He wasn’t sure what he really had left to live for. Everyone was just gone. His brother, Hershel, Rick, Carol, Glenn, Michonne, all those kids… and then Beth was gone too just like that. He hadn’t been able to protect her enough either. That too was on him.
He’d been at it all night, and then sitting down in the middle of that road just seemed like the thing to do. He hadn’t even heard the men that had come up behind him. Or maybe he had and his subconscious mind just didn’t give a shit anymore. Then the automatic fight response kicked back in for a few minutes and then he found himself with a group of men like every other group he’d fallen in with his whole life. Why the fuck not? He felt a little sick at the thoughts that echoed in answer and then buried them all away, content to seek out the previous numbness. He’d been right the first time. The good folks weren’t the ones surviving. A few hours later and they were in some neighborhood approaching a house the rest of their group was supposed to be at.
"That was rude."
"I am sorry. I am not usually one to be rude, but one can't be too careful." Jake stows his pistol back in its holster knowing she hadn't meant to sneak up on him.
