Rocco sat on a bench in the park, the large, heavy text book balanced in his lap. He liked astrophysics, he liked learning, he liked getting good grades; or, that’s what he told himself over and over again. Honestly, while he actually did like the subject, his attention kept drifting. He wanted to play, run around, act like the other kids his age, but he couldn’t. He wasn’t allowed. He had to get over ninety-five on the next test, or he wouldn’t be allowed dinner for a week.
He wasn’t sure how much he cared at this point, however. The usually flavoursome and perfectly cooked food was losing its flavour, turning bland and bitter as soon as it hit his tongue. It made him not want to eat it anymore, but hunger was worse. Hunger made it hard to concentrate, made him feel weak and dizzy, and it hurt. No, he should just study the book in front of him and forget about playing and running.
That’s what a child prodigy should be like… Right?
