XYLUM DEPOSIT DEADLINE: JUNE 1
Nearly everyone has sent in their deposit checks.
If you have done so, do not worry. This post is not for you.
If you have *not* yet sent in your deposit, please do so ASAP.
The deposit for everyone attending Xylum is $250.
The check should be made out to "Edmund Zagorin", subject line "XYLUM".
We only take checks. (And I suppose also cash). But send a check to:
Edmund Zagorin - XYLUM
422 N Clinton St
Iowa City, IA 52245
Send it immediately.
No need to run to the Post Office.
No need to Overnight it, or FedEx or UPS (unless you enjoy doing so).
No need to call and explain why it's late. We already understand.
But seriously, get it on it's way as soon as possible.
If for some dire reason you can't send it immediately then at least send it by June 1. If we don't get some word that it's heading our way by June 1, you will risk losing your spot. Which would be tragic.
IMPORTANT NOTE 1: There are still some people who have not received Admissions Decisions or Financial Aid emails. If you fit into that category, don't worry about sending in a deposit until you hear from us.
IMPORTANT NOTE 2: The most common email I receive is the following: "I have sent you my check but it hasn't been deposited. What's the deal? Am I in?" The deal is that the University has pretty much been glacially slow with processing Xylum checks all year. This is the first year Xylum is at the University of Iowa, so we are still getting some things set up and administratively squared away. If you have sent a check in to us, the likelihood is very high that we have received it. If I haven't, you will hear from us in the next few weeks. Please just bear with us on this. Thanks!
XYLUM APPLICATION DEADLINES: MAY 1
Applications received after May 1 will be subject to space constraints and charged a $150 late fee. Apply here: http://bit.ly/1bdytii

Xylum Financial Aid FAQ
Q: Does Xylum give financial aid?
A: Yes. It is need-based. In the interests of making Xylum affordable to underrepresented folks, students of color & female students are most eligible to apply.
Q: How should I apply for financial aid?
A: Send an email to [email protected]. This email will remain entirely confidential. Please include a brief paragraph about why you want to attend Xylum, what financial barriers are currently preventing you from attending. Please include relevant information, such as whether you currently qualify for free/reduced lunch or your family receives cash assistance.
Q: What else should my financial aid email contain?
A: You should request a *specific* scholarship amount. Emails that say "Please give as much financial aid as possible" will not be given priority. Emails that say "I need a $[insert dollar amount] scholarship in order to attend" will be treated with greater seriousness.
Q: My family has zero money for debate camp. Can you give me a full scholarship?
A: No. Xylum is not providing full scholarships this year. Even our most generous scholarships will require some nominal expense. However, you are welcome to post a http://www.gofundme.com/ fundraising request in our Facebook group or tweet @xylumdebate, sell debate files or otherwise use the Xylum internets to try and close the gap. If you go to a school that has more than 4 students and you are making a team decision where to go to camp, we will work even harder to try and make Xylum affordable.
Q: I sent an email about this and didn't receive a response. What should I do?
A: You should email again -- even send the same email. We receive a *ton* of email about this issue and sometimes one or two will get past us or run into our spam file. If you put your school name in the subject line that usually helps.
Xylum Commuter Option
By popular demand, Xylum is adding a commuter option.
I strongly recommend that students choose the residency options for the following reasons:
- There will be challenge match debates every night in the dorms. These will go *late*
- The morning schedule will have us meeting in different places on different days, easy to follow with the group, harder to get there on your own
- Days before the camp tournament will involve a lot of ad-hoc scheduling determined by lab leaders
*However* I know that for cost reasons some students will only be able to do a commuter option. This option only exists for 3 WEEK and POLICY CLASSIC and only for debate people in Iowa City.
The cost of the commuter option = $1375. Please indicate if you want to select this option in the comments section of the application
