Honestly if you have to go do interviews and explain how it’s not rape, it is and you should have written something better if that wasn’t your intent.
I’m about 5 episodes into the second season of the x files and they closed the x files, but Mulder and Scully are still secretly working together to solve creepy stuff. They’re being all secretive with cryptic messages that one the other understands and counter signs and meeting super secretively but GUYS, THEY SHOULD HAVE JUST FAKE DATED.
Imagine s2 Mulder and Scully pretending to date because they could hang out together and tell each other about their creepy supernatural cases without anyone wondering what they were doing. Just let everybody be like, “Oh yeah, Scully and Mulder, they’re dating and it’s super weird (what does she see in him???) but that’s obviously why they’re always together and calling each other about their nerdy sex stuff.”
THIS WAS A MISSED OPPORTUNITY.
I’ve seen a lot of people say they were more affected by the “Mulder as Dad” scenes than the “Scully as Mom” scenes. On the surface, I was too because I actually cried at Mulder’s fantasy (I think mostly due to the Samantha parallels) but only teared up at the Scully ones. But given what we know of Mulder and Scully, it’s not that strange to me at all that Mulder got the “fun” scenes with watching movies and building rockets, while Scully got the more quotidian, practical stuff of taking William to school and comforting him when he hurt himself. Mulder fantasizes about those big moments (building the rocket!, sharing his fave movies) while Scully aches for those everyday moments, picking her kid up from school, the practical stuff. You have to wonder if when she passes a school bus on the road or when 3 o’clock comes around if she spares a thought for William.
The other important takeaway from Scully’s fantasy is that more than anything she wanted her son to know that she loves him. And yes, that might sound generic and corny, but put yourself in Scully’s shoes. She longed for a child with the man she loved and was told that was not a possibility. Then, seemingly a miracle happened and she had a son that she cherished. Out of love for him, she gave him up so that he would be protected. Even if he has not turned into a science experiment like Emily, she probably worries about 15 year old William thinking his biological mother never loved him, that he was unwanted. Nothing could be further from the truth. Scully never got to tell her son that she loved him at an age when he would have understood what she meant. That’s not corny at all, it’s heartbreaking.
