Howl didn’t realize he had fallen asleep at the kitchen table, he had been studying for his SATs coming up soon at his school and wanted to really well on them so he can go to a good college with a scholarship, not that money was a problem for his family but still, he wanted to do well.

What roused him from his sleep was the feeling of being picked up and held close, his cheek pressed against a boney shoulder. Howl couldn’t make out what the person was saying but he did make out ‘My smart pup’ Howl felt himself be moved then carried upstairs where he was placed in what he assumed was his bed. Howl finally opened his eyes and saw his dad tucking him in for a nap saying that even someone like him needed a break. Before leaving Howl to his nap Pitch said he get his chair upstairs but for now he could sleep as long as he liked.

“Mmmm thanks dad” Howl was out like a light.

@xformiido Drabble of Pitch receiving his gift in the Royals verse, or alternately the gift Manny @mooniisms regrets giving Pitch.

The house was quiet...too quiet.

Pitch was aware of what today was, he had gotten a ‘Happy Birthday’ text from Howl before he went to school, its just Manny was nowhere to be found. When his partner found out he rarely celebrated his birthday the man made it his mission to make the occasion extra special. 

That excited Pitch but also worried him, what was Manny cooking up this year?

Pitch was in his office when he heard Manny enter, turing around he saw his partner carrying a large box, so far this seemed normal “Happy birthday luv!” Manny came over and pecked Pitch, he drew away and placed the box on one of the tables in his office.

“Should I be worried about whats in the box?”

“Nope, I know you’ll love it, the boys helped come up with the idea so this gift is from all of us”

Manny turned around and opened up the box “Happy Birthday!” he exclaimed as he turned around holding something. In Manny’s hands was a cat or what Pitch thought was a cat, the thing was stark white and had dark eyes, it was small so Pitch assumed it was still a kitten, it was wearing a pink sweater with hearts on it, around it’s neck was a bright yellow bow.

“....sweetling why is that cat inside out?”

“Pitch! Don’t be rude” Manny covered the kitten’s ears pulling it close to his yellow sweater vest “It’s a Sphinx cat or more commonly known as the hairless cat and this little cutie is my gift to you” Manny walked closer to Pitch and held the kitten close to Pitch, it cocked it’s head to the side and inclined it’s head closer to sniff at Pitch.

“It’s naked”

“It is not an ‘it’ and she’s not naked, she’s wearing a sweater”

“Sweetling while i appreciate the sentiment why did you give me this breed of cat?”

“Okay when I went with the boys to pick you out a cat we found out that Howl is allergic to cats so I went with one he won’t get sick from, also she’s not like Cerberus and shed everywhere so thats a plus. Come on, look at that sweet little face, how can you say no to a face like that. Also she didn’t come with a return policy so your gonna like her” Manny seethed through clenched teeth as he plopped the kitten in Pitch’s lap.

“Now I’m going to pick up the boys, you play nice with her and also give her a name, bye!”

And now Pitch was alone with a naked gremlin in his lap, he stared down at the kitten who looked back up at him and meowed. Pitch returned to his work letting the kitten curl up in his lap to snooze, no harm in letting her stay there. Pitch then heard something, clicking on the hardwood floor, which only meant one thing.

There sniffing his way into Pitch’s office was the huge Malmute Cerberus, he must had picked up the scent of the kitten and wanted to investigate. The dog came trotting over and Pitch moved away waking the kitten up who saw the large dog drawing near. If the kitten had fur she be bristling it up cause when Cerberus nudged his nose closer to the kitten she let out a loud hiss and swiped her paw at the dog’s nose causing the two hundred plus pound dog to run as fast as he can out the office tail between his legs crying.

Pitch blinked owlishly at the huge dog running away from the tiny six pound naked terror wearing a heart sweater, he glanced down at the kitten who was curling back up in Pitch’s lap. He cracked a small smile as he petted behind her ears.

“Maybe you won’t be so bad”

A beautiful friendship was made.

Later Manny was happy to see Pitch was bonding well with the kitten, the boys were happy too Pitch ended up loving her, he named her Duchess.

Manny and Pitch were retiring for the night when they heard meowing outside their door “Aw she’s lonely, maybe just for tonight she can sleep in here?” Manny was a bit hesitant, as much fun as it was to watch Pitch freakout when Cerberus came into their bed in the morning Manny wasn’t fond of animals sleeping in their bed, but he was happy Pitch bonded with Duchess so one couldn’t hurt.

“Alright”

Pitch opened the door and Duchess came scampering in and up onto the bed, Pitch slide in and Duchess snuggled up right next to him. Manny soon joined in after him turing off the light. After a couple of minutes Manny made a move to reach forward and embrace Pitch but he stopped short to some growling. Opening his eyes Duchess was right in front of his face right between him and Pitch, every time Manny made a move to touch Pitch Duchess would growl or hiss at him.

Manny blinked at her while he watched the cat turn herself around butt in Manny’s face and snuggle right up in the crook of Pitch’s neck.

Happy birthday @xformiido you old fart

‘Birth?...day?’

What was that? He heard Pitch mutter it under his breath when Howl was waking up from cuddling close to his father. The shade detached himself from Howl and told him he be working today so mostly he wanted to be left alone, but Howl wanted to know what this Birthday was.

Going to the library Howl found the large dictionary, the book about words Pitch had shown him if he ever came across one he didn’t know. Though Howl’s reading was still rusty, he had learned a bit with Toothiana but it had been so long since he ever read something, but he’ll try. Finding the word after sounding it out for an hour he found it in the B section. Now sounding out the other words to find it in the large section of B words that took  almost another hour. Till finally he pinpointed the word, now came to hard part of reading what it meant. Some time later Howl found out a birthday was a day to celebrate one’s birth or creation.

Today was the day Pitch was brought into the world! If it wasn’t for this day Howl would never have met Pitch or been created, this was a day worth celebrating! He owed the Shade so much but what to give him? Howl didn’t have a clue what to give Pitch, in the past he was alway hesitant and arms distance with his gifts to him.

And this gift had to be extra special.

It came to Howl and he gave a thrill of success as he darted down the hall to find Pitch.

He found the shade still working in his office, Howl quietly came into the room and walked up to the nightmare king’s desk. He politely cleared his throat to get Pitch’s attention, when he did Howl started to feel meek but this was for Pitch he reminded himself.

“Um I heard you were saying something about a ‘Birthday’ and I looked it up- All by myself too! And found out its a very special day, that if it wasn’t for today I never would have met you or been created and um I wanted to give you this”

He fluttered up and wrapped his arms around Pitch’s neck and pressed his face against it as he let out his chirp purr only heard by people he loved “I don’t have much to give but my love and I hope thats enough, I want you to know that I will forever think this day is special because it gave me you papa”

Howl pulled slightly away to give Pitch’s cheek a kiss and return to his hug holding the shadoe tighter as he could muster.

“I love you”

The nightmare king was in a- oh hell with it, giddy mood.

He was just one step away from finally getting rid of those retched guardians, his second plan was flawless, he learn crucial mistakes from the last one. Now all he needed was to strike the final nail in the guardians coffin.

Pitch was in such a good mood he had to share it with someone, last time he danced on top of one of the guardians key tools with only yetis and elves as an audience. Now he had someone he truly cared for and wanted to share this triumphant moment with him.

“Howl!” he called out for the feathered boy as he entered his domain barely able to contain himself, he hoped his giddy mood wouldn’t scare Howl. The boy was usually thrown off when he displayed more positive emotions. Pitch called for Howl again but still there was no answer from his son. Pitch went looking for him when he came across some dark green feathers on the floor, they seemed to form a trail “Howl? Is something wrong?” Pitch called out again as he followed the trail, concern welling up inside him and he held a breath he normally doesn’t breath as he turned the corner.

The sight before him had him gasping out.

On the floor in a crumpled mess of feathers was Howl, piles of his feathers were around him exposing his pale complexion. Also the feathers left on Howl were a duller color having lost their shine. Howl looked paler too, his grey skin almost looking ghostly white with dark circles around his eyes. He looked ill.

Pitch wasted no second into falling to his knees and scooping Howl up in his arms, why was he liked this? Why had he suddenly become fatally ill?! Pitch cradled Howl close as he watched more feathers fall away when he brushed his hand through Howl’s fading crown. Pitch stared in horror as the feathers fell through his fingers, Pitch pressed Howl’s face close to his shoulder as he tried waking the boy up “Howl wake up. Please wake up, Howl? Wake up!” Pitch lightly shook Howl and that prompted the weak fairy to open his eyes.

“D-dad?”

“Yes pup its me, I’m here I’m going to help you”

“I feel like my life is being drained from me”

“Shhh don’t speak I’m going to make sure your okay”

Yet Pitch had no idea what was wrong with Howl- wait, he said he felt drained that his energy was fading from him.

‘Everything your friends protect, wonder, hope and dreams it all goes away. And little by little so do they’

Pitch recalled what he said all those years ago and remembered how Toothiana lost the ability to fly and her feathers withered away. The same was happening to Howl- of course! He’s one of her minions just touched by his darkness, Howl was still connected to her so if they tooth fairy fades away so does Howl. 

Rage, guilt, anger, pain, sorrow all welled up in Pitch’s chest he he clutched Howl tighter. He had done this to his son, he had almost failed another child at his hand. Wasting no time Pitch took Howl to his room, a trail of feathers following after the shade. He laid Howl to rest, Pitch would have to move quickly to set things right without the guardians getting suspicious, they still will after he ceased his attack before the final blow, he prayed they won’t come snooping.

“I’ll be back, rest pup”

When Pitch returned he could already see improvement in Howl’s state, feathers were growing back and the dark feathers were getting their shine back to them as well, Howl’s complexion looked much healthier. His son will be okay, he let him still rest as Pitch sat down on the bed and brushed a hand through the new softer feathers of Howl’s crown.

"I won’t fail you again, I promise”
