he talks straightforwardly enough (”hey, y/n, do you want to go out with me later?”), but his past history of unpredictability puts you on edge

he will try to prove his sincerity to you, answering honestly and transparently to any questions you ask 

if you say yes, he’ll swear to you that he’ll be the partner you deserve, that he’ll do what he can to provide for you (financially from his rank has harbinger in the fatui) and make sure that you’re always safe

your wellbeing would be his top priority and whatever he can do that ensures it, he’ll make sure that you have absolute confidence in him

poor boy would trip over his words.  either that, or he just freezes up completely, blanking out in the moment 

probably hides his face in the sleeves of his coat so you can’t see how flustered he is

will then work up the courage in a “just rip off the band aid” mentality, and runs through his words – “ilikeyoualotpleasegooutwithme” and immediately feels like screaming 

takes him a while to calm down from his embarrassment, but is relieved that you don’t seem put-off by his behavior and took the time to listen to him

if you say yes, he’ll be the softest boyfriend you could ever ask for.

he actually wouldn’t confess or even ask you out, but instead demand your presence next to him constantly

would say something along the lines of “from now on, you’ll be by my side and heed my every word” and most likely get upset if you hesitate – he’s used to getting what he wants when he wants it, so uncertainty of any kind will irritate him

until you  submit to him  respond positively to his advances, he’ll continue to pester you 

he won’t be a partner in the traditional sense; if he’s interested in you, it’s because of what you can provide for him, whether it be power or opportunistic situations

it’s best to be careful with him though, because once he’s set his sights on you, it’s near impossible to shake him off

nothing fancy, just your hands in his as he speaks.

“be with me,” he’ll say.  despite not phrasing it as a question, he speaks softly enough so that you know he doesn’t intend to be pushy. 

takes the situation very seriously and will give you the time you need to respond.

is internally pessimistic about what you might say: he’s been alone hundreds of years, and considering his past, he would understand if you wouldn’t want to be with him romantically.

if you agree, he’ll nod and squeeze your hand.  he’s repressed his emotions for so long, so you’ll have to give him time to truly open up.

xingqiu

this boy has half the mind to serenade you on the spot, but he will ask you out as if he were talking to you normally.

“would you take me on a journey fit for a tale of generations to come?”

probably brings along a glaze lily, or any other flower that he knows you like for some flare.

smiling the entire time because he’s excited (and, needless to say, optimistic) about your response.

very open about his affection, and will hug you on the spot if you say yes, immediately arranging a lunch/dinner date to celebrate the occasion. 

zhongli 

“there’s this restaurant that i believe you’d like.  if you have the time, i’d like to take you there.”

although he means for his words to come out romantically, it just sounds like he’s asking you out to a friendly dinner – just because it’s, well, zhongli of all people.  he’s always had his head in business and economics, and has never been one to dabble in sentimentality. 

will eventually clarify once you’re at the restaurant, finding difficulty over the exact words to say (is the geo archon actually stuttering?), but will mention how he enjoys your company and wants to be with you more “intimately” (read: “as your boyfriend”.  we’re not talking about someone who’s up to date on modern connotations, after all).

will hold your hand across the table for the rest of the dinner if you say yes.

although he won’t show it through his facial expression, he makes his concern clear through his mannerisms and tone of voice.  while he’s guilty of hinting at wanting to be more intimate with you, his reluctance stems from being scared that he’ll hurt you in some way.

he’s got more strength than a mortal could ever hope for.  what if he feels as if he’s not exerting any strength at all, when in reality, you feel like you’re being crushed?  it’s not a thought he wants in his mind for too long – but nonetheless, one that he thinks about, because he’s always wanted to keep you safe, and the idea that he’d be one to hurt you . . . devastates him. 

so when the two of you are touching each other too much, when he secures you on top of him with his hands on your hips, tongue in your mouth, about to growl your name – he’ll be the one to pull away, with his palms on your cheeks and fingers brushing underneath your eyes, and will shake his head.

he just . . . really doesn’t want to hurt you and mess up.

“i’m sorry, but we can’t,” he’ll interject, brows furrowing.  up to that point, he’d believe that you were enjoying his touches, that he was making you feel good.  but he’s always held himself back – it’s not an easy habit to break.

this is the cycle for a long period of time.  he’ll only allow himself make-out sessions with you sparingly, and you don’t pressure him.  just a few finger squeezes, and a kiss on the forehead, and you give him time to think.

if he does decide to go the full way with you, it’ll be under the circumstance that he believes he has confidence in his restraint, and that he’ll be vulnerable to you.  

when he’s decided, he’ll upfront tell you that he wants to make love, to go all the way, so you know that his actions are deliberate.  he wants your first to be special, that you’re both comfortable with going that length.  it isn’t that he’ll demand it at that instant, but more so that, whenever you’re ready too, he wants you to know that he’ll be ready as well.

slow and steady does it: the next time passion rises between you two, he’ll rub circles on the inside of your thighs so you know that he’s willing.  you just need to say the word, and he’ll do his best for you.

kisses on your neck, shoulders, and stomach seem to ease you well enough – he might nip at your skin with his teeth every now and then, since it seems to get you excited, although he never fully bites down.

holds your hand the entire time as reassurance.  especially finds it encouraging when you squeeze it back, as if it’s confirmation that he’s making you feel good.

xiao’s ideal partner . . .

he’s not the type to grow affections quickly.  having hundreds of years to reflect on his past hasn’t given him the best thoughts on relationships, either.  so if he is to grow closer with anyone – much less, be romantic with them – it’ll take a long, long time.

though, on the off-chance, he does find himself enamored with someone, they should be . . .

someone who understands boundaries.  this doesn’t mean they can’t be curious – but specifically pertaining to xiao, a loner that speaks bluntly and in few words, they should understand when he isn’t in the mood to talk, or isn’t willing to discuss certain topics.  this once more relates to his time in solitude, even during the age of rex lapis: he habitually took lives in the age of gods, and that sensation hasn’t worn off even in the slightest.  so his withdrawal from conversations is to be expected, and someone who understands that he needs his space, that he needs to be the one to determine when he’s all right with talking about certain things, will make him feel appreciated, like he’s his own master instead of playing by someone else’s agenda or desires.

sincere.  someone who, when they make promises, will follow through with them, and doesn’t take words lightly.  years of deception under his false god and overlooking fickle humans have (unfortunately) reinforced the notion that no one is to be trusted, and that things are only said to please or manipulate others.  realizing that you stick to your words – no matter how trivial or temporary the matter might seem – will catch him off-guard, since he isn’t used to honesty.  while his appreciation of your genuine, good-natured self isn’t obviously apparent, it’ll show by how much longer he entertains your company than with other visitors.

a gentle soul.  he’s experienced harshness throughout his entire life, more than anyone should bear.  an individual who can remind him that life isn’t all disappointments and loss, and instead, show the mellow qualities that it has to offer, will be a breath of fresh air.  at first, he might be overly cryptic at your soft nature, but time will show that your approach isn’t excessively “pacifist” as he might’ve originally assumed.  if anything, your tenderness will be like the warmth of a hearth in the frigid winter: comforting, someone he seeks, because you’re the calm in the midst of the storm – you’re someone he’ll feel secure with.
