maybe a-qing is just way too in the way for him to get away with it. maybe he heals more slowly and this gives him time to second guess his plans after he begins to figure out that xiao xingchen really is the too-good person he seems to be. maybe he’s there to witness a real night hunt that nearly goes very bad and starts to realize that what xiao xingchen needs is not a tormentor but a protector—someone to shield him not just from the people who want to take advantage of his blindness but also from his own self-sacrificing idiocy. maybe it’s an amnesia story and he doesn’t remember he hates xxc until after he’s fallen in love with him in a way normal people would recognize as love instead of *gestures vaguely at canon* whatever that was.

whatever happens exactly, the result is the same: the yi city found family is a real family. these three doofuses love each other. and xue yang knows he can never, ever let xiao xingchen know who he is because it will ruin everything. he finally has something good that he really really doesn’t want ruined.
