At the party's once every five years Congress held here last month, Xi, 69, was reappointed as General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) and head of the Central Military Commission (CMC), the overall high command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), for an unprecedented third five-year term. In contrast to all of his predecessors, Xi is the only leader to hold onto office after serving a 10-year term (apart from party founder Mao Zedong). On Tuesday, he paid a visit to the joint operations command centre of the CMC, an important resource for the CPC Central Committee and the CMC's strategic leadership.
