Both before leaving the Boston QZ and after, Ellie has always questioned what the point of loving someone was. In her life, people seemed to go faster than she could even form relationships. But, after becoming friends with Riley, she felt something...more, and she realized it was not only one of the most exhilarating emotions she'd ever felt--it was also one of the most terrifying. She didn't know how to handle something like this, and had nobody to talk to about it besides the person that made her feel that way. That's one reason why Ellie was on such a roller coaster ride during their trip to the mall, resulting in the kiss.
The thought of Ellie being in a relationship with Riley (or anyone else post-TLoU) isn't on the forefront of her mind. However, spending more time with her will most likely result in that thought (or even those feelings) springing up again.

I think that Ellie might die in the result of protecting someone. She can be extremely quick on her feet and dart out of the endangered area if need be, but will use those tactics instead if a friend is around, diverting the enemy's attention to her instead.
