The Dark at the End of the Tunnel

Luffy was no longer hysterically sobbing like he had been that day. Less than a week ago his emotions had been nothing less than a roller coaster flying out of control but now the ride slowly was coming to an halt. He was still strapped into the ride but instead of loops, the tracks were straight and dull. When he was with his friends, exploring the grandline, he’d wake up everyday excited and ready. Now he awoke everyday alone. Instead of jumping out of bed and racing to the kitchen he’d just stare blankly at the sea for awhile, numb. 

Luffy was in an ocean of depression the following months after Ace’s death and for awhile. Flash backs of the war attacks smashed into him like waves. The devil fruit user had no idea how to swim or even float in it all.  A smile felt unnatural on his face but he wore it while old man Ray and him trained. In the afternoon however he completely isolated to his thoughts. 

That night Luffy did something out of the ordinary. He removed his treasured hat and placed it on a particularly prominent rock. It was Luffy’s own personal way of admitting he didn’t feel like himself at that moment. Without his brother, without his friends, without his home, with all these negative thoughts, who was he? He promised Shank’s to protect that hat and return it when he’d finally become king of the pirates but right then, Luffy was unsure about even that.

“...”

“I’m sorry.” His voice cracked. “I’m really... Sorry.”

Later he found himself belly down on the beach, unconsciously tracing his finger in the sand and  whispering Binks Sake to himself.
