"Eat a little more," Cecilia insisted, nudging the plate closer to Toto. They sat by the edge of the water together, the last remnants of a picnic accompanying them on the soft blanket, and with her large, spiny figure guarding over it, the seagulls didn't dare interfere.
"I'm, um, I'm really full," he said, holding his hands to his rounded belly.
"You have to get all your nutrients so our eggs can grow big and healthy." She slipped her tail protectively around Toto's waist, letting the large fin lay over his middle like a blanket.
"How, how big are they gonna get?"
"Nice and big. Like this." She formed a circle with her webbed fingers about the size of a pomelo. Toto rubbed his belly apprehensively. A cluster of those growing inside him would fill him out pretty good. He didn't think he even had space to eat more now; he wasn't sure how he'd manage to feed himself and the eggs by the time they were fully grown. Cecilia wasn't troubled by the thought, though, and she lifted another bite of grilled fish to his mouth.
"Eat," she urged, and though his stomach already felt stuffed tight, he reluctantly obeyed.
By the time Cecilia had fed Toto to her liking, he felt about ready to pop. Between the clutch of baseball-sized eggs packed into his swollen lower belly and the enormous hunk of fish puffing his stomach out taut under his chest, he looked like he'd been blown up like a balloon, his round tummy sticking out comically from his skinny frame. Smiling, she lifted his sweater, her scaly hands tickling the sensitive skin, and leaned in to place a kiss just above his strained belly button.
"My little seahorse," she grinned, nuzzling his tummy with her cold nose. He shivered at the ticklish sensation & wrapped his arms around her as she sat upright, full belly pressing against her clammy skin.
"I'm glad I don't have to be a seahorse alone," he said, settling his chin on her shoulder. She hugged him gently, and he closed his eyes, feeling safe under the weight of her strong arms. The steady song of the ocean was soothing, and with his belly full, he felt like he could fall asleep right there.
"You need water," she said, tipping back to touch her nose to his forehead before reaching for the bottle he'd brought. A small sound of dismay escaped him, both at being pulled from her embrace and at the thought of consuming anything else. He knew she was right, though; he had to stay well-hydrated to carry fish eggs, and when she brought the bottle to his lips, he didn't argue.
His stomach ached as he sipped the water slowly, filling in what tiny gaps may have remained after the big meal and stretching it further. He felt his upper belly tighten, gurgling softly as the liquid squeezed into it, and he held a hand to his stomach. It felt like a drum, pushing out firm against his palm with an urgent pressure. Finally, he took Cecilia's hand and gently moved the bottle away.
"I'm too full," he said, holding his belly. A sudden hiccup jolted him, and he felt the eggs shift and resettle inside him as his tummy tensed up.
"Oh, poor seahorse…" Cecilia helped him ease himself back on the blanket, and they lay together under the warm sun, her big, scaly hand resting protectively on his distended tummy. She could feel the soft grumbles of digestion and the gurgles of water shifting as he breathed, and the bulges of the eggs pushing out against his skin with each hiccup. She rubbed gently, hoping to help soothe the overstretched feeling, resisting the urge to press and squeeze at the wonderfully soft skin.
For a while, despite feeling calm and content laying beside his wife, Toto's face remained pinched with discomfort, the pressure pushing out inside his belly so great that it ached even to inhale. With Cecilia taking care of him, though, the soreness and the strain began to ease up, melting into a heavy, comforting fullness. With his stomach digesting softly under the reassuring weight of her hand, the warm breeze blowing and the familiar sounds of the sea, sleepiness overtook Toto at last, and, laying his hand atop hers, he finally dozed off.
