All to be jossed when we finally get to Sharlayan someday, but meanwhile:
The branches of Miqo’te tribes based in Sharlayan do not engage in “barbaric” physical combat to determine their Nunhs. Logic games and puzzles, 3 dimensional chess tournaments, aetherology debates and feats of rare magic--these are the challenges a man wanting to prove himself capable and desirable to the cerebral ladies of the Y must undergo and win decisively.
Y’rhul Nunh held his place for many years and fathered many children. As a result, he isn’t terribly close to many of them. Friendships between the various sisters and few brothers were encouraged, however, by their father--as well as competition in various scholastic activities, encouraging (pushing) them hard.
Y’shtola was one of the more brilliant but also more headstrong and competitive children; she’s closer to Matoya than to either of her parents. Y’shtola’s mother was more interested in her own academic work and had a child out of a sense of duty and obligation (and a bit of an accident). She and Y’shtola are quite different in many ways, though some similarities do shine through. She was also more interested in the new Nunh that took Y’rhul’s place. Y’rhul himself did not take to losing his position well--more for the academic drubbing he got than anything else.
Do I have outline notes and draft beginnings for a story along these lines? Maybe. Gimme more Sharlayan lore, SE.
