Just a swatch with Sashiko stitching. No cleaning and no finishing yet, but I feel pretty calm when I see Sashiko in ordinary days. I don’t drink alcohol, but I have a bottle of good Sake for other cooking. Sushi, Sake, Japanese culture and its product are well adapted to the western culture. I hope, one day, Sashiko will be one of the Japanese culture many people would understand without specific explanation.
Photos from a summer visit to Yaegaki Shrine, located on the southern outskirts of Matsue City.
Yaegaki Shrine (八重垣神社) is where the Deity Susanoo is enshrined. This location represents the spot that Susanoo and his bride, Inata-hime (also known as Kushinada-hime) lived after he saved her from the eight-headed serpent, Yamata-no-Orochi. Because of this being the home to the newly-weds, the shrine is known for making prayers for finding a suitable marriage partner etc.
In the wooded area behind the shrine, there are trees that have small fences around them. These trees are said to be sacred, and originally pilgrims would have placed their hands on the tree to make a prayer (before the shrine structure existed). In order to avoid damage due to large numbers of visitors throughout and over the years, it is no longer permitted to touch the trees, but the quiet and nature makes for an interesting atmosphere.
The pond located in the rear section of the shrine grounds is called the ‘mirror pond’ (鏡池), and Inata-hime is said to have used it as a mirror, as well as for drinking water etc. Nowadays, visitors to the shrine place a coin on a piece of paper (with fortune inscribed) and float it on the surface of the pond. The length of time the paper takes to sink is said to signify your luck in love/ marriage. (Paper with inscription is sold next to the main building of the shrine, Y100 per sheet).
