Yahoo Hack Taiwan: It's a Wrap!

Congratulations to all the hackers who participated in Yahoo Hack Taiwan last month. Over 200 developers and designers were chosen from more than 700 applicants to participate in this year's event. Hackers divided into 56 teams to create a diverse array of apps. As with all other Yahoo Hack events, Yahoo Hack Taiwan provided plenty of hospitality, including good food, drinks, ping pong, and other details that kept the energy at a high level.

At the end of 24 hours of hacking, 56 hacks were produced and of those, the following winners were chosen:

First Prize: Good Lock - a text message storage and retrieval Web app for reducing distractions and increasing user productivity. If you know Mandarin, check out the hack demo video for more details on the hack. Technologies used included HTML5, font-awesome, iCulture Open API, jQuery, AngularJS, Bootstrap, Yahoo! pure, Flickr, Rails, and YQL. Watch the screencast.

Second Prize: YA TAIKO! - Google Chrome extension that helps you clean away your Yahoo mailbox immediately and integrating a Taiko-like rhythm game with achievement system. Here is the Ya Taiko screencast in Mandarin. Technologies used included the Yahoo Mail Web Service API and the Facebook Feed Dialog API. Watch the screencast.                     

Honorable Mentions went to two photo hacks that used the Flickr API: FotoFlick and Leak Motion.

  Yahoo Hack Taiwan rounds out a whirlwind year for Yahoo Hack events that have happened in London, Beijing, Tel Aviv, Hyderabad, and Sunnyvale. We'd like to thank all of the people involved in making Yahoo Hack Taiwan possible, including the organizers, judges, and of course, the hackers.

Yahoo Hack Taiwan Happens November 2

Yahoo Hack Taiwan is taking place in Taipei on November 2-3. A record number 200 teams and 700 developers enrolled in advance to participate in Yahoo Hack Taiwan. Our final hack event of the year promises to be epic!

Developers will use a collection of Yahoo tools, services and APIs as well as open data around the web to build their applications. Popular technologies and tools expected to be used include Yahoo’s YUI, YQL, BOSS, Flickr, as well as Open APIs from Taipei City Government.

Yahoo Hack Israel: Winning Hacks

We had an amazing group of hackers join for our first Yahoo Hack Israel.  120 developers traveled in from all over Israel and lit up the historic Hatachana Compound, our beautiful backdrop for the event. Israel's vibrant start-up community represented itself proudly, with many developers, CTOs, and CEOs participating in the event.  Many hackers stayed up through the night and, after working feverishly for 24 hours, produced some amazing hacks!

Here are the winning hacks from Yahoo Hack Israel:

Best Overall – #7 – Bully Alert

Protect your child from cyber bullying. "Half of teens have been the victims of cyber bullying. Well over half of young people do not tell their parents when cyber bullying occurs." The site enables you to check if your child (or user) is a subject of cyber bulling. You can get a real time report or get mobile alerts.

Best Technical – #10 – Deep Surfing

3 dimensional web surfing. Utilizing Touch design and python, Kinect, Orientation sensors, a PHP application server utilizing BOSS and url2png.

Most Creative – #2 – La Di Doodley

An Android app' allowing the user to record a musical scale in his/her voice; the scale is later used as an instrument on which familiar ringtones and message alerts are played, recorded and used.

Best Potential Product – #8 – HideOff, Hide and seek

HideOff is a Chrome extension that helps users decrease the clutter of the web and see what elements are the most relevant to them. The extension brings hyperlinks into the future by whiting out images which link to webpages that the user has already visited.

Hackers' Choice – #11 – Doodle Blaze

DoodleBlaze allows you to express your creative muscle quickly. Creating short animations and sharing them with your friends has never been easier.

Yahoo Hack Israel: It's a Wrap!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the first Yahoo Hack Israel, an event for the developer community in Israel. Hosted at the beautiful Hatachana in Tel Aviv, Yahoo Hack Israel was an amazing time of connecting, collaborating, and hacking together. Yahoo Hack Israel: Hacking Has Begun!

The doors have opened and the 24 hour countdown for hacking has begun at Yahoo Hack Israel. The Hatachana, our historic location for the first Yahoo Hack Israel, is abuzz with hackers.

Energy levels are high and should stay that way as the day takes it course - we have hundreds of grams of sugar, caffeine, and other hacking staples planned to keep the momentum going. Yahoo Hack Israel: Community Site is Open

We are just a few days from the first Yahoo Hack Israel, and couldn't be more excited! For all the important details related to the event, check out the Yahoo Hack Israel community site.

In a nutshell, we'll be hacking the night away starting this Thursday, October 17, and finishing up with demos, judging, and prizes on Friday, October 18. Our venue will be the awesome Hatachana in beautiful Tel Aviv.

Registration is open through Wednesday evening so register now if you haven't already.
