on the “not like other girls” trend

i've just seen another rant video about the "not like other girls" trend/meme and tried watching it and yet again, it rubbed me the wrong way. because while i agree that this trend is very cringe, as someone who used to agree with this type of content back when i was in my early/mid-teens, i'm just pissed because i KNOW there is a deeper problem behind this trend that no one ever seems to acknowledge. back when i was a young teen, in junior high probably, i would agree with this type of "not like other girls" bullshit. why? because i was bullied at school. i had only one friend, a boy. we were both bullied all the time because we would roleplay a lot (which everyone else thought was obviously "too childish") and they kept saying we were together because of course, how could a boy and a girl be just friends, right? i think what we're overlooking here is the fact that the "not like other girls" trend is a direct unhealthy coping mechanism used by girls in response to the pressure of society's expectations, especially expectations of how women should look or act (as you will see a lot in this trend : beauty standards, stereotypical "ladylike" behavior, etc). it derives from young girls who are rejected by society and cope by overcompensating, telling themselves that their difference makes them better somehow. it's a trend that at its core wants to celebrate difference, and the idea that girls do not have to conform to the standard idea of womanhood in order to be accepted. except of course it does poorly at it, because in order to accomplish this, it bashes "ladylike" women, thus repeating the cycle of toxicity and stereotypes by simply setting a different standard for women instead of simply abolishing the idea of policing how a woman should or shouldn't be. thank you for coming to my ted talk
