Whatever happened to YAL-1, AKA: Space Laser guy?
Space Laser guy! He's great. A lot of the more... elaborate aircraft testbeds require someone to be volunteered, because they look incredibly stupid and people laugh at them.
Case in point:

Anyways, most of the time there were not many volunteers for aerial test bed stuff.
But this is a flying laser gun mod.
Every 747 who could apply, did.
Reportedly there were actual fights breaking out between jets because everyone wanted in.
This guy won.
The platform was not an overall success, but he managed to get one hit in during a functioning test, which basically means that he has managed to do something that nobody else has.
Once the program ended, the Air Force took the laser off, much to his irritation!
He's still with the USAF, but still says that he's the Laser Gun Guy.
