Fanfic Writer Asks: 1, 6, 13
1. who is the hardest character for you to write?
I think I have the hardest time writing Brick, because I don’t want to treat him like he’s stupid. He’s uneducated, but not dumb IMO.
6. What has been the hardest fic for you to write?
The Lilith fic for the Borderlands Big Bang a few years ago. Not only plot-wise but because my beta reader dropped the ball for 3 weeks and I had to bum rush the last few chapters 3 days before the deadline.
13. How do you come up with your titles?
Titles are usually the last thing that come to mind. If they’re single-chapter stories, I just go with the theme of the fic. If it’s multi-chapter, the title is more random (and I honestly have more fun coming up with title chapters than anything else; the current Warframe fic titles are all named after energy drinks xD).
Kitty: You can't just force people to do what you want!
Red: That's one of those things that people say that's just not true. Like... "there's no place like home". Hell, I can think of a hundred places better than this!
//three tips in and the summary of ‘How To Win Inara’s Heart’ is basically “be Shane Hawke”
|| drabble for @smartmouthedfereldan
“Hey, come here.”
She catches him by surprise -- snaring his hand as he tries to pass by her to... wherever it is he goes at night, disappearing for a few hours after dinner and only dragging himself back as the sun hid behind the horizon line. It had been his nightly ritual for some time now; Anders was too consumed with plans and reports and Justice to notice, and Nathaniel is grateful for silence however it comes to him.
“What’s going on, Inara?” Shane almost seems nervous when she pulls him into her “bedroom” (or what passes for one, now. It’s a room, and she sleeps in it, though a ‘bed’ is not involved, a pile of furs in the corner giving enough cushion for what little sleep she gets on the run.) “Hey, is everything okay? Did I do something--?”
Before he can finish the question, she’s got her fingers in her hair, her body pressed to his for a long, slow kiss. It takes all of a half-second for him to get into it, his arms circling around her, pulling her closer despite the stiff heat that surrounds them. He’s used to this -- sex is as welcome a distraction as any while they twiddle their thumbs and hide from the Templars. But she stops him when he tries to slip his hands beneath her shirt, and leaves him puzzled.
“How are you?” she asks him then, her lips grazing his as she looks up into his eyes. “You’ve been quiet. How are you doing?”
“Fantastic,” he answers, capturing her lips again just after with an eager little smirk twisting them beneath hers.
But she stops him again, and he looks confused again. There’s a pause, then -- it must be the angle, because for a moment, the two manage to see each other’s faces beneath those masks they wear -- him tired, sad, and a little bit broken, and her concerned, caring. It only lasted a moment, but that moment was enough. She’d had her suspicions, but now she knew.
She doesn’t ask him again how he is; he’ll only lie. Instead, she pulls him close and whispers, “I want to play a game with you. For every nice thing you say about yourself, I’ll give you a kiss. Okay?”
He tries it once, twice. “I have nice hair. I’m hilarious.” She kisses his lips. “I look great naked.” This time, she kisses his chin. “You missed,” he says.
“Oh, the kisses go down as you get nicer,” Inara answered, and for a moment,
Shane looked too surprised and... excited. He tried it a few more times. “I can jump really high. I’m flexible. I give good head. I’m gentle!” The kisses trailed down his chin, his neck, lingered on his collar bone, and she could feel that he approved of this plan. But then he said, “What happens when I run out of good stuff?”
“You won’t run out of stuff,” Inara told him, pushing her fingers through that ridiculous tangle of too-long red hair as she regarded him with a more serious tone. Again, she saw that flicker in his eyes -- a crack in the veneer, a little plea for anyone to notice the shadows that passed over his face. Then, softer, she said, “If you forget... I’ll help you.”
“Okay,” he said. “I’ll try.”
“Okay,” she smiled. And kissed him.
“No fair! I already got past my lips!” he objected; she only groaned.
completing missions gives u exp which gives u command ranks which unlocks characters. unfortunately phoebe is pretty high (like command rank 22 i think?) but all characters have a secondary method of unlocking. hers is to kill 50 enemy players in versus mode i think.
ahh okay, time to grind all the exp in story mission (since im not a fan of pvp in general lol). but this games so much fun, so i hope ranking up happens fast
what was kaiden like as a kid? did he have a lot of friends? how does he feel about his past and where he's been and how he's grown?
Kaiden had an absolute shit childhood.
His parents only wanted three kids, and they made it clear that they hadn’t wanted him, even from a young age. (Alexius’ line “You were a mistake” hit him really hard.) And then when he was 7 he came across a family who was hiding from the Templars, and he helped hide them. Brought them food, even snuck them into their estate a few times when it was raining. But then his parents found out, and they were furious. They called the Templars without Kaiden knowing, and he witnessed the murder of the entire family. It.... really hit him hard, and he absolutely hated his parents, the Chantry, and the Templars from that point on.
Kaiden showed a bit of magic when he was 9. His sister Lavender helped hide it, and they actually were able to for about a year and a half, but because they magic was being suppressed and he wasn’t actually training with it, he had outbursts every now and then. One of these outbursts happened at the dinner table, with all three of his siblings and both his parents present.
They ended up not sending Kaiden to the Circle. They were concerned about their image, and Vincent, Kaiden’s cousin, had also just been sent to the Circle. Instead, they worked to help hide Kaiden’s magic. He didn’t have much problem with it, his connection to the Fade was weak anyway, but the fact that his parents made him do it made him incredibly angry.
Sometimes, Kaiden wished he had been sent to the Circle. Yeah, he’d heard the horror stories, and he absolutely hated the Templars and the Chantry, but his parents, plus all of his siblings (besides Lav) were just terrible to him. He wanted a way out.
The eye tattoo that he has? He got that from a Fereldan refugee when the Blight hit. His parents immediately disowned him at 17 and he was sent into the world. He really enjoyed his freedom at that point. For the first time, he was actually able to live. No worrying about his parents, or his siblings, or the Chantry work he’d been forced into.
As for friends. Vincent stayed with Kaiden’s for the family for a while, and he was with them when his magic manifested (it caused quite the scandal.) Then there’s also Macie. The three were very close before Vincent was sent to the Circle. Afterwards, Macie was really the only friend that Kaiden had. They drifted apart once he started traveling, but the Inquisition brought them together again ten years later. During his childhood, he lived a pretty secluded life, because he was afraid of his friends being torn from him and preferred being alone over potentially losing someone.
Once he started traveling, though, he made a ton of friends. He was easy to get along with, and he loved hearing other people’s stories. The most notable person he met was Al’vharen (who I haven’t made in the CC yet), plus his group of travelers. Kaiden met the group while they were in Wycome, and started to travel together after that. Eventually they entered a relationship, and were together for five years.
Looking back, Kaiden wouldn’t change anything about his childhood, because it led him to a life of traveling and meeting a wide variety of people and he loved that. Yeah, his first 17 years were awful, but they shaped him into who he is as a person. And he met Al’vharen because of it. Even though they parted ways, Al’vharen helped Kaiden in a lot of ways, so he’s forever grateful for that. His parents disowning him is literally the entire the reason he has the mark, as well, so he has some mixed feelings about that, but he wouldn’t change it.
slides into your inbox so tell us a little about what kind of food and drinks kaiden likes and doesn't like? (idk if this has ever been asked before but im curious, favorite dishes say a lot abt an oc)
Hmmm, okay, so this isn’t really anything I’ve thought much about before...
But when it comes to alcohol, I can def see Kaiden being a wine person? Like, he’ll drink pretty much anything, but give him the choice and he’ll always pick wine.
As for food... I know he doesn’t like fish. The texture is weird and he doesn’t like the taste. He grew up in Ostwick, though, so he doesn’t mind the smell. Kaiden isn’t really a picky eater. Going from place to place for most of his early 20s, and then later with the Inquisition, he learned to eat just about anything. Also, dark chocolate is probably one of his favorite splurge foods.
