5 reasons for Tai/Matt?
slow response is slowwww but oh man where do i begin. childhood otp!
1. what tai did for matt
the first half of the series where matt was a loner and at times way too close to becoming the villian, tai basically gave him hell until he pulled him out of his shell (aka emo bubble), and out of his comfort zone. he beat into his head that matt was important, he was needed, and very much a part of the team. at the end of adventure (and in 02) we see a completely different matt. he's chilled out and grown up and and self-assured. he has worked through his trust and abandonment issues quite a bit. in many ways, i kinda love that tai (and the team) helped repair a lot of the damage that matt's parents put him through when they split. i don't think he would have gotten to where he was without tai pestering the fuck out of him--lovingly of course :) and matt says as much to davis later.
2. and what matt did for tai
i think a presence like matt's helped tai grow in return. the boy is possibly my favourite forever but i'll be the first to say that tai needed to (and managed to!) do a hella lot of growing up. when we first met him, kid was kind of a brat, one with a good heart, but definitely reckless and shoot first ask questions later kind of guy. sure, the course of the series taught him that things have actual consequences but matt was the only one at first who wouldn't take his shit and didn't hesitate to say it to his face. and whether he liked it or not, tai really needed someone to do that for him. so yes, mutual character growth, fuck yeah!
3. i am weak for awesome teamwork
although they weren't the oldest or the most responsible, i think they did work their way into becoming the mom and dad of the group. it started off with matt being the voice of reason and tai being the energy, and slowly they started balancing each other out and being kickass together to the point where they were just always assumed to be a team and be together (not to mention their lovechild omnimon -- no one else from adventure got one!) and god, it was lovely to behold!
4. common denominators
they just got each other on a really fundamental level even though at the start it was all kicking and screaming (often literally). at the heart of it, being an older sibling makes up so much of who they are as people, and the family theme, not even gonna lie, is one of my favourites in this series (i can eeeeasily write another essay or a novel on THE FAMILIES in this show alone). the point is, we got to see them both be vulnerable and see each other vulnerable when it came to what was important. i think that a huge part of what finally got them to put their differences aside and be like, okay, here, we have to stop the bullshit and fight for what we love, and protect the people that matter. it was a priority they both had in common and believed in with everything they had.
5. THEY LOOK SO GOOD TOGETHER AND WOULD BE SO GOOD TOGETHER
i can just see them growing old together, and they'd still banter and bicker and give each other a hard time but they would also always be honest with each other and never hold back. it's like the kind of love you get out of friendship, where someone knows you way too well and it can get insane but it's also the most comfortable thing in the world and i can see them becoming that. (as a total aside: it is incredibly unfair that there aren't enough rockstar!matt/soccerstar!tai AUs in the world even if there are in my head LA LA LA)
well that went on longer than expected, whoops! but i am shocked i managed to do this semi-coherently instead of just being FLAIL FLAIL FLAIL THEY ARE PERFECT AND DESTINED AND OTP OKAY. beacusr they are. reason number 5.5. bam!
this show has taught me so much japanese
