今年は行政のコロナ対策で事前予約の入場制限が実施され、近くには寄れず。職場から急いで歩いて来たせいか空腹と夜の寒さに襲われ、近くにあった自販機で熱いココアを流し込んだ。

Burning of Mount Wakakusa 若草山の山焼き.  Nara City, Japan,  is witness the annual special event called “Burning of Mount Wakakusa”. It is a ritual called “Yamayaki (山焼き)” to appeasement those who have already passed way, as well as a prayer for peace. The burning is also said to help prevent wildfires and promote revitalization of the mountain’s vegetation – wakakusa literally translates as ‘young grass.  The event is also usually accompanied by fireworks

Yamayaki (山焼き) at Mount Wakakusa, Nara, Japan.

Yamayaki is a festival in which the dead grasses on Mount Wakakusa are burned. The festival, which takes place annually in January, supposedly originated from a dispute between the temples Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji in which the mountain was set ablaze. The ceremony begins with representatives of each temple lighting the grasses followed by a fireworks display.

The building seen at the front of this image is Heijo-kyo, a reconstruction of an ancient palace.
