#miaou #miaoumusic #yankanoi (Shibuya O-nest)

YankaNoi 1st Album Release Party @ Star Pine's Cafe: Show Report
(2014 9/26)
[warning: quite Shugo biased but what did you honestly expect]
There were two opening acts: 森は生きている and おれ、夕子。(T.V.not january) The first was voice and acoustic guitar which was entertaining. The second played an amazing (-ly long) instrumental song that was loud and moving. The next two songs were freaking fun. Funky bass and guitarists (one who said he admired Shugo~), lively drums, a flute player!, and a pianist who was really into it.
Once they were done at 8:30PM, the crew began setting up for YankaNoi. The setup included: drums; full-size bass; grand piano; two small tables for toys and trumpet; Yumiko center stage with an accordion, bass, trumpet and drum around a couple mics and a music stand. There were over 11 mics not counting drum mics. Her mic and the tables were adorned in scarves for dressing. [see here for a photo of stage placement]
The show opened with 「ひろうき雲」 . Shugo played guitar on the piano bench in the back and did backing voice. He has such a clear falsetto it takes a close ear to pick him apart from the women.
In the 2nd song: 「ちぎれた海」 Yumiko picked up a little white Hohner accordion with a gorgeous surprise of red bellows. (If you like TMBG, John Linnell has used many Hohner accordions especially for live shows because of its size and sex appeal). Shugo began showing his habit of mouthing "wah" and "puh" and "bum" with beat centered instruments.
He gets into the music in subtle, still passionate movements. When he plays piano he jumps a bit--off the bench!--hunches and lurches forward. For the 3rd song 「ヒバリ」 he played piano and accordion piano at the same time for parts.
These are very experienced and versatile musicians as exampled by the drummer in the 4th song 「山の向こう」 where he scratched a cymbal with the head of his drumstick. This was the most different song because of its lack of other instruments, mainly focusing on bass and bass guitar sending us into new depths.
With Yumiko on the accordion again (she puts it on fast!) next came 「真夏の陽炎」. Shugo played guitar with backing vocals. He looks at the audience briefly. Mostly he looks down, checks on the other musicians (usually the drummer), and looks far off up into space perhaps Music Land where music itself visualizes before his eyes. Or he's remembering what comes next.
Leading into the 6th song, Shugo had a toy that was a stick with something attached to a long string he spun around creating a squeaky door sound. He scrunched up his body as he and the trumpeter switched places. For the actual song: 「そら」 he played recorder(!) and accordion piano like a keytar.
Shugo didn't say a damn thing except a couple mutterings during mic check, but he made a beautiful "gasp" when he kinda fell into the piano bench for the seventh song.
A surprise guest tuba player came out, 椎藤 who was well known by some of the crowd. They played 「光の中」 which was more upbeat than most of the songs which sound a little lonely. さびしい as the enthusiast I sat next to put it. Again Shugo played guitar while mouthing "bum" along with the tuba.
Next, Shugo began strumming what sounded a lot like ABBA. And so it was indeed a cover of ABBA's SOS with less funk and more horn. If there was a time I could've snuck a recording it would've been that one.
There 9th song 「凍原の裏」 a soft song with power from trumpeting and (Shugo on) the piano.
In 「ネウマ」 Yumiko showcased her flute ability which is just as lilting as her voice. Also her efficiency at switching instruments mid-song, in this case the accordion again.
For the last song 「白い遠円」 she welcomed three guest brass and wind players. We applauded but it was taking a while for them to come out so the drummer started a slow clap, but even then it took a bit and he said, “Guess they’re not here!” Shugo was super cute during this how he clapped and anticipated with really wide eyes. The guests joined on stage for a lively song in which Shugo stood and played a keyboard(?) set on organ atop the piano.
When they “finished,” took a bow and left, the crowd applauded for a while then turned to single beat claps for an encore which of course they filed back out for. Yumiko came out adorned in the bear head mask as seen on the album cover. She very cutely had to lift a flap to see as she spoke about the album release and thanked the musicians and staff. She took off the “hot” mask and played the finale: 「対岸の君」.

Overall, the experience was a fantastic almost 2 hour event. Very clear, vibrant sound. No apparent technical problems, (I'm in theatre. I would see/hear it). The space was great for the occasion--intimate, respectful, and inviting (that goes for the crowd and staff too). YankaNoi's music consists of Yumiko’s soft breathy voice and fuller sounds due to having a full-size bass, grand piano and plenty of horns. There are influences from Shugo, but all art draws from somewhere and what a special muse. Even with the influence, Yumiko still makes this its own music. Her voice totally reflects her style: airy singing voice with a husky speaking voice that shows her resilience while keeping her softness. She is the frontwoman and clearly contributes greatly music-wise, however it really feels like a group effort rather than mainly focus on Yumiko. She may not have the brightest presence on its own, she does, however, create brilliant music.
