King Candy drawing tips (real no clickbait)
Heads up, this post is SO long. Full under the cut if you'd like to read my insane ramblings
This is all a bunch of stuff I keep in mind when I'm drawing King Candy! Tips and tricks, if you will.
Three things to keep in mind about all this:
His actual 3d animation model vs. promotional material are slightly different.
They cheat in his animation half the time, in a couple different ways. There's a couple things that stay consistent, but he warps a lot.
THESE ARE NOT RULES!! Nor am I the all knowing King Candy artist paragon, I'm just a person who draws, and this is to elaborate on a question I received.
OKAY!
Eyes
I think of him as having two different "kinds" of eyes, tall/cartoonish, and rounded/emotive. His pupils are pretty much always circular, except for certain smear frames. He usually has rounded/emotive eyes, but switches between them constantly. He usually has round eyes when being friendly, and long eyes otherwise. They are also SUPER deep into his skull, his eyebrow ridge is massive (turbo helmet). He's got small eyebags, but very visible heavy eyelids. His eyebrows are also super muscly and take up a bunch of space. Forehead wrinkles when his eyebrows are up. Top of hair lines up with top of eyes. Ears line up with bottom of eyes.
Nose
Cheats. They cheat his nose in animation. His nose usually sits slightly underneath his eyes, but only if he's facing forward. When in profile or 3/4, he has a blind spot. When he's looking directly forward, his nose is very round, but slightly oblong. From profile it's short and tilted up very slightly. Where it connects to his face is kind of odd,,,, it's kind of flat, kind of rounded? Idk I redraw it constantly.
Mouth
There's a specific very rounded smile I see a lot. His mouth also kind of has this,,, wall? effect? from certain angles. It's mostly visible in concept art, but it happens on his model. His cheeks make a specific shape that I Love to death. And his smile lines aren't always visible, plus they connect closer to the inner corner of his nose, rather than the outside. His teeth don't have much detail from afar, they sit flat in his mouth, and also disappear frequently (cheats to make him more cartoonish).
Chin/neck
His chin is so Nothing bro. Mouthbreather fr. It is there, though, and you can usually see it when he has a little double chin. His neck is very awkward. Very short but very thick. weird shape. Also! It doesn't end in a point! There is volume to his neck! Also, cheek falls into a certain shape from 3/4 angles.
Body
I usually just draw a little cylinder, put puffy pants and then legs. His legs and his shoulders stay on the same axis. Legs taper at the ankles, arms don't. His hands are fucking massive for his tiny body. So are his feet. Super long and bappy. His pants have little shorts underneath, I SWEAR. Only visible from specific angles.
In general, his proportions are so funny. HUGE head, tiny eyes, massive hands and feet, tiny body. I still struggle with his head a lot, but in general, however much forehead you think he has, he probably has more. I use a little thing where the back of the head lines up with the jaw/ear, but this is a general guideline I use when drawing anyone, not just KC.
I use slightly different rules when he's Cybug, like understanding his teeth/mouth area as being rectangular/cylindrical. His hair is ever so slightly crazier, his eyebags/eyelids are darker, so are his eyebrows, and that's about it. Other than those, all other guidelines still apply.
Don't ask me about his crown or hair, I wing it every single time. Crown has 5 points, that's all I keep consistent because I am Lazy.
These are by no means rules!! They just help me make him look a certain way. I don't follow these every time, nor should you. Draw him in your style, however you want! Sometimes I take inspo from his concept art, official pins, and promo material to change it up! It's fun to experiment with how to draw him :)
