Making a lore post about my own interpretation of Sky lore that is relevant to my characters in case anybody wants to see it.

Spirits: The spirits are the people of the fallen kingdom who’s souls have been trapped on permanent loop. These spirits spend much of their time unaware that anything is wrong and go about their day as normal (or as much as they think is normal), with no memory of the horrors that happened to them. The only time they are capable of remembering is when a child is reliving their memories, which gives them a few precious moments of lucidity before they are sent back to the loop. Spirits in Aviary are also on this loop, and they don’t notice that the children are there. The only living child who’s presence they notice is Natalie, and her existing near them also allows them to remember that they are dead.

Twins: Twins are when two (or possibly more) children are born from a single falling star. These children should be raised together for social development purposes, and develop odd quirks, personality traits, and coping mechanisms when they are not. They can also tell whether the other is still alive, in orbit, or ascended forever.

Rebirth: Sky children are usually born with an appearance of around a 4-10 year old, and they do get older as time passes. When they die in Eden, rebirth is a process where they are sent to orbit and then sent back down through a star, being able to keep their memories. For many children, their first trip through Eden is incredibly traumatic and often greatly impacts them and who they become, but the older children have often resigned themselves to the pain and are much more fine with it.

That being said, no child lives to be an adult, and all children eventually go to Eden and simply do not come down from orbit. Instead, they fly off to the stars where their friends will never see them again. Most kids are given a sort of feeling in their gut when it’s their last trip through Eden, but not all of them are able to identify what it is or try to convince themselves that ignoring it will allow them to be reborn again.

Language: The Sky kingdom had a written language as well as having spells and a tradition of communicating through murals and artwork. The children can speak the language and can approximate meaning from the murals, but the actual written language is lost to them, although some children work to see if they can piece together the meanings.

Written language in Sky is pretty interesting because they have a character system involves putting characters together to create words, but also involves many words (mainly those related to magic, colours, anything religious) that involves the word being one unique character (like we can see in the dye shop!).

I know there’s a mostly finished character list on the Sky wiki, and I’d like to take that and update it to involve more unique characters before I start drawing comics of my characters! There’s lots of room for creativity.

Spells: They were a very religious thing for the former Skyfolk, although nowadays kids just think of it as something they can do, something that just happens. They’ve never had the religious education that the former kingdom had, so how would they know better?

I haven’t created a whole lot of lore for spells yet, but spells are condensed light that look like floaty coloured balls in their original form and can be stored either in a thin shell that allows you to touch them or in something like a stone pot that allows you to carry multiple at once. They can be created and given to people post-creation, they do not necessarily come into use the moment they are cast (although many of them do). They’re not easy to master and are most often used by religious figures. Spellcasters can be identified by the headcrest with symbols on it that all of them are required to wear. These headcrests also act as a sort of power source that makes it easy to cast as often as they do, otherwise they might find it very draining.

Physical anatomy: The Skyfolk are built like humans but are made of a non-biological material (so their bodies don’t decay in the same way that ours do) and they lack any reproductive organs. They are a species that reproduces asexually and with the blessing of their Megabird. They also lack blood in the same way we do, and they instead have light floating around their body that is only visible through their eyes and the light on their chest.

While they are all sexually androgynous and therefore do not need to have gender-affirming surgery, it is customary for trans Skyfolk to be given tattoos on various parts of their body to symbolize their transition. These tattoos are dependent on what their end gender is. If they have multiple genders, they get multiple tattoos. If they transition multiple times or transition and then detransition, they also end up with multiple sets of tattoos. I’d like to draw diagrams for what the tattoos look like at some point.
