Patio Musings...
I wanted to finish my art over the weekend but ended up doing literally everything else other than that LOL
Spring Inspires Gardening Chores in California

I raked the leave from our 35-40' x ' 30' diameter ashleaf maple.
I raked them onto a 10'x12' tarp and dragged them back to the vegetable garden. Boy are my arms and shoulders not used to doing this shit.
This is a picture of the tree from 4 years ago. The trunk is probably 4" bigger in diameter now. Ashleaf maples are fast growing, adding about 3'in branch growth per year.
Totally understand having a shower beer.
Except I made a huckleberry vodka lemonade cause Guinness is too heavy for how hot I am
I’ve been doing a lot of weeding at my folks’ and Leia insists we hang out a bit in the family room first and have couch snuggles. This day my mom was out at her memory loss support group so it was just Dad and me weeding. Mom doesn’t talk about what happens at the group much, but she’s completely devoted to it, and I’m glad I found it and suggested she check it out.
Dad and I were on opposite edges of the same bit of the yard, he was working along the side walk and I was working along the lawn edge. Leia came over to nibble a single blade of grass next to me at one point, but mostly sniffed around and stretched out in the sun. She’s got a lead on a metal screw that goes into the lawn so she can hang out with us and do her own thing.
When we finished and came back inside, Leia went right back to the couch and re-assumed the ‘gimme rubs’ position, and I’m a total sucker for it.
Ben and I just worked out in the yard for a couple of hours. Feels great! My mom said that she thought I would having a yard and it turns out she was right. Ben planted his cherry tree sapling and the rhubarb plant his dad gave us and I cleared out the garden bed and wrangled the raspberry (i think, might be blackberries) patch into a more manageable space. There are strawberry pants I want to move and I need to start seedlings and we still need to rake up the leaves, pine cones and deer shit all over the yard plus we need to clear the gutters. But a good start!
Down the west side of the house are three strips: a strip of weedy grass, a cement walk-way and a strip of dirt right along the house. This is the dirt along the house: red-hot pokers which are quite done for the season, an azalea that looks okay when it blooms hot pink and an azalea that is quite dead which has bittersweet nightshade blooming in the wreckage. The black tubing is for the run-off when the water barrels are full so that the excess water is carried away from the house foundation. That needs to be redone too.
I went at it with a hand saw, being careful to leave the bittersweet nightshade. That’s one of the witchiest things in the whole yard. The azalea wood was rotted in a few spots and I got to do less sawing than anticipated. I’ll let those mulleins stay and do their tall thing next year. The dryer exhaust is here which is probably what contributed to the illing azalea so I have to think about this before I try and replant anything.
I have one other spot with bittersweet nightshade, a teeny vine of it is over by the east fence, wound in with the butterfly bush.
