i feel like even without my "thats my darling sweetface angel <333" glasses on ian is genuinely one of the most compelling characters on the show and i rlly like your perspective on things so as a fellow ianlover i must ask what are some of your favorite things abt him??
this is kinda one of my fav questions ever WEEEEE YAY thank you for giving me the opportunity to wax poetic about ian i would be lying if i said that he is not one of the reasons (ONE OF. I HAD OTHER REASONS) that i started dyeing my hair red almost ten years ago.
ok my sweetface glasses also off rn: i do think they hit the nail right on the head in frank’s opening monologue “ian: industrious, conscientious, ambitious... incredible work ethic” and when they introduce him in the script, they describe him as “fifteen, smiling, a little goofy, instantly likable.” like damn. hes just straight up likable. AND IS! obligatory mention a lot of the things i love about ian’s characterization are due in part to cameron’s excellent portrayal of him as well as the writers and directors having a tight grasp on who he is.
i love that he’s a kid with such a strong moral compass and sense of justice who just cant help but get into mischief. he’s cunning even if socially inept sometimes, and his goofy unassuming nature distracts from how manipulative he really is. but hes not overly malicious with people because, at the end of the day, he has a bleeding heart.
he’s someone who is obsessed with becoming the best version of himself he can, having control over himself, and keeping a sense of calm in a chaotic household. so naturally, he ends up with a seemingly uncontrollable mental illness. and he fucking struggles and is beat down, but he finds purpose by going back to who he always was: someone who wants to help others and has goals to work toward. for a character who constantly voices unsureness in his identity, he is so consistent in his motivations and instincts (even if they're misplaced, like it does seem like he truly believes that the american military is altruistic). i love that he holds himself accountable for things he’s done, but tries to not let guilt swallow him-- he just works to be better in the future.
i love that he’s cringe and he makes bad puns but pulls crazily anyway bc he’s “just that good.” i love that he loves kids and babies. i love that he is stubborn and pushy with mickey once theyre a sure thing but ultimately willing to compromise or give in if it’s something mickey won’t budge on (like the apartment, and i imagine he's this way about them having kids too).
it is so compelling that he’s a contradiction in multiple ways, someone who doesnt understand his own thoughts or feelings sometimes. and he’s definitely an annoying pain in the ass and deeply flawed too. he and mickey truly deserve one another #TheWorstPeopleYouKnow like truly. idk. just love that he's so fleshed out...
THANK U for asking this ugh i love to talk about ian (and mickey and really any of the characters bc i find them all so interesting). fellow ian lovers forever...
