Temples - Columbus, OH

So... My friends & I decided to get lunch at North Market before we ventured on our musical, er, adventure to see Temples and it was a good choice. I had great coffee flavored ice cream, and curry & rice to last another day. We then went record shopping, in which I scored another Lovin' Spoonful record, Tago Mago from Can, Kraftwerk's Computer World and FIVE KINKS RECORDS, holy shit. Village Green, even!! It was like it was meant to be. The shop owner said he posted on facebook about a new stash of Kinks records, and played them the whole time we were there. I also got The Dukes of Stratosphere's Chips from The Chocolate Watchband on cd from the same guy. (We also browsed around American Apparel for a bit, but I got better things to spend $60 on than a pair of shorts, y'know?) Now, ABOUT TEMPLES! Drowners were the openers, and, while I'd heard OF them before, I'd never heard them. Mr. Matt Hitt, the front man of the group was definitely the showpiece of the band, but over all, they weren't bad. Just a bunch of black-clad dudes belting out short, sharp rock 'n' roll tunes. Had a sort of 2001-ish guitar- band-revival feel to them, I thought. I enjoyed them. If I were 17, I'd have probably flipped my shit, but...oh well. Temples, were, (of fucking course) STELLAR. James said that the heat the crowd was producing was making his guitar go out of tune, which meant we were obviously having a good time - and that he liked that. Their set consisted of highlights from the album - a few of my favorites were the b-side Ankh, MOVE WITH THE SEASON & THAT GNARLY VERSION OF MESMERISE, UGHH HHH. James gave a lovely little banter about the coincidence of the fact that their hometown shares a name with one only about a stone's throw away from Columbus. He asked where it was, if Ohio was big, etc, and Adam said he should've looked that up on Wikipedia, to which James replied, 'I don't go on the internet...' or something like that. Someone shouted 'Waterloo Sunset!' at one point, but he said 'no, no.' They only played 10 songs, but they were so gorgeous, noisey, pretty & amazing to hear, it didn't matter that it was only 10 songs. During the closer, Shelter Song, the guitarist for drowners stood behind my friends & I taking photos of the band (just like I was) and having a jolly time, apparently. He told me I should grab the set list at the end of the show, which I did by climbing on to the stage & grabbing the one Adam had tucked under his keys. Afterwards, I went outside to find Tom & his girlfriend having a chat with fans. She leant me her lighter & we talked for a bit. She was really, really sweet. She even took a photo of Tom & I together. So cool. I tried to talk to James, but he was immediately swarmed with people. Sam came out next, and I elbowed my way through the crowd to speak with him. I said told him how I liked the show & said I just had to shake his hand; a vigorous & firm shake, such as you'd expect from a drummer, hahha. I also told him I was sad I missed him the last time I saw Temples, but he said his visa issues didn't matter, cos he was here now, hahha. He was then kind enough to take a photo with me. (He squeezed up right next to me, which was...unexpected? Hahha. But not dismissed, lemme say.) I wanted to speak with Adam, but...he split. And I don't blame him, cos that crowd was getting a bit pushy. Oh well, though. I've finally met all four now, so I can live with that. My friends & I left soon after for pizza, beer & sleep. It was a drowsy drive home, a happy day over all, and a lot of fun. Oh, and have I said how Sam liked my shoes?? Hahhaha.
