With writing dialogue anything that is meaningful, used for development, emotional (good or bad), and/or written for a purpose are good rules of thumb to stick by. Not in every case, of course, but think along those lines. I was writing something I thought was particularly genius and as it turns out it had no purpose or meaning for the story. It was verging on funny, sure, but it felt empty the more I stared at it. Tossed it and somehow the paragraphs flow ten times better now. Yay for editing...! ;__;
