It was about three months after his passing that Brendan realized that he wasn’t passing over to either side of the spectrum any time soon. He’d be a spirit left in limbo, wandering the world until he would either figure what he needed to do or hopefully someone would come take him to either Heaven or Hell. The only person he could think of that needed him to do something is Lizzie. He’d follow her around for awhile, to try and figure out what needed to happen. 

The one night he decided to follow her around is the night of her first date after his passing. He didn’t know why she was getting dressed up so nice, it was Friday night, sure, but she hadn’t gone out on Fridays before. He followed her to a bar, when he could see her meeting up with someone, Josh being his name. 

“Josh.” He spat, knowing that no one could hear him. “Fuck Josh.” Jealousy ran through him as he watched the pair closely, glad that no one could actually see him. 

“He’s not right for her. He can’t actually think he’s got a chance with her, does he?” More or less mumbling to himself now, Brendan could tell that there just wasn’t a spark with them. Not like he and Lizzie had before. They had chemistry, they could carry on a conversation or sit in a comfortable silence. And it almost made him happy to see the couple part at the end of the night.

Benton was ever the romantic, always bringing Kaylee home flowers, candy, stuffed bears, anything really just to make her smile, make her day just a bit brighter. He just loved seeing his wife happy. This time around though, he’d just come off of a two day job, glad to be coming home without a bruise or a bite on his body. But Kaylee wasn’t home when he got back, so he decided to surprise her. 

A few hours later, Kaylee walked into the house, the scent of fresh, homemade food filled her nostrils, and she smiled. Benton was home, and he made them dinner. She kicked off her shoes and went into the kitchen, seeing the table set up for two, candlelight and all, and not to mention her husband in a suit. 

“Well welcome home, Mister Steiner.” She hummed, going over to him to run her hands over his suit coat. Damn, did he pull that off nicely. 

Benton just smiled down at her, “I thought I’d surprise you with a little something for my triumphant return. I hope dinner is good enough for right now.” 

Kaylee nodded, “I’m okay with anything as long as it involves you and me together.” She grabbed his tie with one hand and pulled him down so she could kiss him properly for the first time in two days.

"No, the solution is not smashing the smoke detector."

“Yes it is. The batteries have been changed, I’ve tried to reset it a dozen times. I just need to kill it.” Benton grabbed the source of the noise off the wall and headed down to the backdoor, the item in hand. “I’m taking it outside and smashing it. We have four other ones in the house, I’m sure not having this one is gonna be perfectly okay. We will survive without the fifth alarm.”
