8 and 28 For Kater Tot
8: Their face when someone says, "I don't love you anymore."
Kate studied the boy’s face and realized that he has the audacity to look sympathetic. His big blue eyes were soft at the edges, and there was a sad downturn to his mouth. He wanted to do it in person, he said, because he “respected her”.
Funny how this confession came two weeks before he left for uni.
Mum was right. Never date a white boy.
She raised her eyebrows and tilted her head. “So?” she asked. As if he had ever mattered.
28: Their interactions with a small child.
She traced a finger over the downy soft hair, poking at his little cheek with a teasing “boop!” That made him giggle, and she grinned broadly.
“Do you wanna go play with the flowers?” she asked, helping him to stand up on his little chubby legs in the grass. “Yeah? Are you gonna try and pet a bee?”
He was not going to play with the flowers, or pet a bee. He squatted down and began bouncing the palm of his onto the edges of the blades of grass. He glanced up at her with big, caramel eyes and let out a shriek of laughter, then repeated the gesture with renewed vigor.
Kate laughed, amused and delighted by his antics. “You are such a silly wee one aren’t you?” She reached out and ran tickling fingers over his chubby tummy, which made him topple over into the soft grass. He did not seem distressed by the change in position, but wriggled around until he was lying firmly on his back, kicking his fat little legs in the air and giggling.
Cullen, from where he had stretched out to doze on the picnic blanket, mumbled, “He’ll be needing a bath when we get home.”
“Mhmmm...” Kate replied absently, wiggling her son’s little toes between her fingers as he laughed and beat tiny fingers against her hands. “And isn’t it nice you’ll be so well rested and refreshed so you can give it to him?”
