Art is a language. Now lemme say it again-- Art is a pictorial language. I really want you to let that sink in for a second.
Art is a language. It's communication in the form of an image. And maybe it's a comic or an animation and so there are written/spoken words attatched to the art as well but...? How many wordless works or photographs or sculptures have you seen in your life that your brain instantly translated for you. Think about it. Really!
All these pictures we collect in our brain every single day are talking to us, they're saying something! And the thing about art is that sometimes that something is subjective and unique to us and us alone. That's what makes it special. But even then! At the same time...! They're talking! They're communicating! We're communicating together via pictures and images everyday, even if we're not actually saying words to each other. Isn't that amazing!?
And... I say all this, because I realized I have this societally held belief that art is worthless. That art is something humans could live without, that it's not as valueable as science or math or even sports. But can humans live without language...? And I dont mean survive, I mean really live! If you take away words-- Then that only leaves pictures. And art, unlike spoken or written language, is a universal concept that even our earliest ancestors understood and could speak. Art has the ability to wordlessly unite us all. And in that way, art has a massive amount of power! So doesnt that mean the language of art is pretty damn valuable afterall...?
