Oh man, someone else watching Aquarion!

For sure, the emotional background of the scene has been building up throughout the show, although I think if there was a change from “awkward children” it really started during the couples event. Maia’s desire to cut back her reliance on Akira and assert herself was then challenged when Nesta revealed that she was created from fragments of memories, putting that assertion in doubt. And then, this happened:

Although Akira had been taking a beating, Maia was able to maintain her sense of self and suppress Nesta long enough to make them vulnerable.

And now, the battle of self-sacrifice! Akira already made it clear that he was willing to vanish while fighting with Vector Ga if it meant he could protect the others, and now Maia tries to pull the same thing. However, her conviction seemed stronger to me. Whereas Akira’s always been “I am the savior, I am the savior” without any rhyme or reason behind it, Maia has been developing independence and identity throughout the series.

And he can’t do it. I don’t know if I can take it as far as “Akira lacks conviction,” because he clearly cares about Maia even if he can’t explicitly say so. But he is completely reactive here: he can’t make a hard decision, doesn’t take action, and ultimately a lot of people die because of it. So, as I see it, the strength in this scene is almost exclusively driven by Maia.

If this were another Aquarion, I’d guess that Akira’s fixation on being a savior is probably because he’s one of Apollo’s reincarnations. My guess is that he’s somehow connected to the writing culture that Nesta fought in the Writing War, which is why he knows he has to do something despite his fragility when the chips are down.

“ MAGIC MIKE 2 saved my life” Because she was asked “what’s your goal for the next six months?” She replied “ To see Magic Mike 2 again” The nurse laughed and she said “I’m serious…my heart rate was 200 bmp, and they were worried because I also had pericarditis, and I was coding…but I said ‘don’t worry, I won’t die. MAGIC Mike 2 hasn’t been released in the theaters yet’ …because trust I wasn’t going to die without seeing it”

She was deadly serious!
