And then the clock turned and the 7 turned to 8. Happy Birthday and Happy New Year to me 😊😊😊😊😊 #birthdayboy #newyear #Year28
Year 28
We found an apartment. That came first. Then dusty Kenya and the fastest sunrise you’ll ever capture, if you can. Chasing elephants from tree to tree. Making friends with Samburus and feeling like Indy hundreds of feet up in a rickety spotter plane. Then London and smoking too much. Getting smoked. Easing into France in a fast car with Ness in the passenger seat. Headlights peering through the darkness. Towns still made of brick. Destination: Cormolain. Finally seeing Normandy beach and letting my imagination run wild. Seeing red. The peace of the evening ferry across the North Sea. Immigrants climbing in our trunk on the way back. Then lots of stories. Back and forth from Philly for the tale of Ikiré. Losing my mind, I think. Leaving things unremembered. There in LA for two dads and back again. A crisscross pattern across America. Pharmaceuticals. Miles Davis growing older and fat. Family coming together and falling apart. Climbing Yosemite with dad. Thinking about mom. Drinking more. Closer to the camera. Listening to Felix being born from the hospital hallway. What an experience. David and Johanna's wedding in Malmo then making the road trip through Sweden to Stockholm. Old friends having dinner. My own motorcycle when I got home and felt calm nerves for the first time in a while. Then smashed up at 1am when my number got called. Not bad. Another airport. More flight. London, this time a bit sweeter because of the solitude and the walking of quiet streets. A storm passed. The graphic neon lights of Tokyo or the untroubled countryside of Nagano. Serene. Heavy cameras, lots of gear lugging from plane to truck. Loading and unloading into temples of various kinds. Then racing on the back of a Royal Enfield through Mumbai during the Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi - elephant God of wisdom, knowledge, and new beginnings. Mobbed by crowds, separated and lost. A quiet cigarette in a stranger’s doorway on the edge of the water. Slums and heat. Food that packs you in. Jakarta and Risky the fixer. Security guards telling tales of the dead mud river. Feeling the need to return for something different. More speed. Wrapping up with Bowser and Bartholomeu and bombing up to Bear Mountain when the warmest winter on record turned suddenly cold. Her parents in a car accident. Tough reminders of life. Writing now - write it all down or miss the point. Then Brazil, lovely Brazil. The jungle city of Rio de Janeiro. Legs burning up the favela streets. Tomaz the calm fixer, Octavio the crazy talkative one. Ricardo taking a nasty spill. Singing “I can’t get no satisfaction” in our hotel room. Remember that? Terrible times. A birthday. The convent on the hill. Definition of splendor. Links made and broken. Wonder. Kinship. And the first feelings of ancestry.
