In regards to the menstrual cycle-less female characters, one of my all time favorite authors, Tamora Pierce, has a score of amazing female characters, and most, if not all, mention their bleedings, and must cope with them the stories go on. If you haven't heard of Tamora's work, then I would really suggest checking her out.
