How do you get yourself out of an artblock? I've been unsuccessfully trying to draw something and it's either what I typically do or just flat out bad. I feel like I'm in a rut because everything I do looks like commercial art?
Ahhhh yes, the art block, I know of it...
The things I usually do to try to escape from that dreadful place are these:
I look up some of my favorite artists and browse there work for a bit, usually that can stimulate some nice inspiration and get you a bit pumped to start working. To warm up I start to sketch some things that don't really require creativity. Practice drawing stock figures off deviantart, skin tones, animals, objects. Draw yourself, your friends, draw some rabbits. You can use references from google or any site. Listen to you favorite bands while doing this, it'll put you into a kind of art trance. Slowly the rabbits will start to grow horns, or feathers, patterns will slowly appear. Lay down some watercolor on that bitch, don't worry about messing up this is your time to not care and not be under pressure to turn out anything coherent or clever. Before you know it you'll be doodling pages of stuff! The main thing is don't freak out if what you're doing isn't your best work because the point is you've opened the gate, you know?
I hope this helped, art block sucks butt, however the upside is they are never permanent, you just gotta force yourself to work through it. Good luck!
