Despite the heavy protests from your assistant, and the fact that you were waiting in your hospital bed waiting to go in for heart surgery, you were still able to sneak in a pint of Ben and Jerry’s and eat it between doctors and nurses walking in and out.
You quickly hid the carton as the doctor and your assistant came in. Your assistant stood by your side as the doctor talked you through what would happen. That’s when you felt them. They were somewhere in the room watching over you, too. You shifted suddenly and the carton hit the floor.
Both your doctor and assistant scolded you for having it, especially when you needed to have nothing in your system before the operation.
You explained it wasn’t your fault, since you were supposed to be in surgery the day before, and the doctor pushed it back to tomorrow. If anyone was to blame, it was surely the doctor, not you.
Your assistant apologized and walked out with the doctor. You suddenly felt warmth over your heart. It was them.
“I can’t see you, but I know you’re there.” You felt them for a few minutes more, then they left.
When you woke after your surgery, you felt them in your room again. They were there when your coworkers came with gifts and balloons. There when the doctor explained how the operation went and what you could expect while recovering. Visiting hours were well over, and you still felt them there as you surfed through channels. You looked over at an empty seat. “Anything you wanna watch?” You clicked through a few more channels before turning off the TV. “Yeah, me neither.”
“How do you know I’m here when you can’t see me?”
You grinned and looked over at the now occupied chair. Your mouth dropped. “Damn. I forgot how good looking you all are. Look at you.” You eyed his chiseled face, broad shoulders, muscled arms and chest barely hidden beneath the clothes all of them wore. “Fricken gorgeous.”
“We all are? You know us?”
“Oh, I know just about everything about you.”
He stiffened in his chair and gave you a defiant look. He was going to need proof.
You grinned more smugly. “You live in the library. Can speak every language there is.” And you can hear what I’m thinking right now.
“Stop that. How do you know?”
“I was one of you.”
His mouth dropped this time. “What?”
“An angel. I used to be one, just like you.”
He only gave you a blank stare.
“What’s your name, kid?”
“Hoon.”
You kicked your legs off the side of the bed and pulled some pants from your bag in the corner. “What’s say you, Hoon, we get out of here.”
He walked with you to a diner a few blocks from the hospital. He sat and simply stared at you in awe as you ordered practically everything on the menu.
You spooned cherry pie into your mouth. “I’ll tell you, Hoon, there’s a lot of great things about being human, but food is definitely the best. It smells good, tastes good, even the texture feels good.”
He looked down at a side plate with a gray, square, fried brick on it. “What’s that?”
“Mmm. It’s everything from the pig but the oink. It’s called scrapple.”
“What does it taste like?”
You cut off a chunk with a fork and examined it closely as you explained. “It’s crunchy on the outside, creamy on the inside, both a little savory and sweet. People shy away because of what’s in it, but it’s truly satisfying to eat.” And so you did just that.
“How?” You knew he was no longer asking about the food.
You drank some milkshake before answering. “The great thing about this life is freewill. Humans aren’t the only ones who have it.”
Hoon looked puzzled. “What do you mean?”
“You have it, too. You can think for yourself. Make choices. Choose to be one of them, like me.”
“How?
“You choose to fall, Hoon.”
“Fall?”
You couldn’t help but smile at his stupid, beautiful face. “Fall from grace. Fall from heaven. Give up your wings and become human.”
He sat straighter. He’d never heard stories of the fallen before, that much was clear. “Are there others?”
“Sure. I’ve passed some before. We don’t exactly speak, just acknowledge each other. It can be hard to think back to our former life.”
“And you just . . . fall?”
“Off a building, a cliff, jump from a window, yeah. You make up your mind to do it, then do it.”
“What’s it like?” he whispered.
“After you fall?” You munched on a few french-fries. “You wake up, sore, in pain, all cut up from the fall, but it’s still the greatest thing you’ve ever felt. You’re hungry, only you’ve never been hungry before. You stink. Everything seems louder. Harder. But you wouldn’t trade it to go back to before.”
There was curiosity in his face now. He couldn’t possibly understand, you knew that. “Why did you choose to fall?”
You chuckled and shook your head. You took one more bite of French toast, then gathered your things. “They still gather at sunrise?”
“And sunset.”
“Then let’s go.”
You and Hoon stood on the beach facing east. It was slowly getting lighter and lighter. The top of the sun peaked over the horizon.
“Can you hear it?” Hoon asked.
You shook your head. “That’s only for your kind.”
You watched as Hoon closed his eyes, then decided you wanted to mess with him some more. You took off your clothes and ran towards the water. When you were at the edge you turned and yelled at him. “I might not be able to hear it, but you’ll never get to feel this!”
You jumped into the water and started swimming. Soon Hoon, fully clothed, was doggy paddling next to you.
“What are we doing?”
“Body surfing.” You waited for the wave to suck you in. “Start swimming!”
He listened and followed your lead. The wave brought you back to the shore as your surfed in it.
You chuckled and went back to your clothes to sit on them and watch the waves.
“You have wings.” Hood commented. He was referring to your back tattoo.
“Couldn’t completely let them go.”
He stared at the ocean with you for a long while. “You never answered me.”
You looked over to him.
“Why’d you do it?”
You gazed deep into his eyes, as if trying to see his soul.
“How about I show you my world, and you can know for yourself.”
He again looked dumbfounded, but he stood when you stood, waited for you to put your clothes back on, and followed you as you walked back to your car.
