Last week @worldpressphoto held their Masterclass West Africa in Accra, where several @everydayafrica contributors were involved in both teacher and student roles. Meanwhile we're still sharing the work of the incredible participants of the Masterclass East Africa held in Nairobi in December. Check out witness.worldpressphoto.org to see more from this beautiful and important story from Miora Rajaonary @miorarajaonary!! Title: Terminus Yeoville Many African migrants who decide not to cross the Mediterranean Sea head to South Africa for a better life. After they land at the O.R. Tombo International Airport, the majority ask their taxi to take them to the same destination: Yeoville. Yeoville has always been a unique suburb in Johannesburg. It was the bohemian cultural center of South Africa in the 1970s. It then became an apartheid-free zone in the 1980s, where black and white could sit, eat, drink together in the late 1980s. Following the fall of the apartheid regime in 1994, the white population that used to live here in the 1980s and early 1990s moved to the northern suburbs, giving way to a wave of new residents, mainly working-class South Africans and migrants. Today, Yeoville is a vibrant, dynamic, diverse pan-African village in the heart of Johannesburg. It has become distinctively different from what it used to be and from the rest of the city, thanks to the African immigrant community redefining the culture of the neighborhood in a big way. This work is an attempt to tell the story of these migrants who are trying to reinvent themselves and transform the space they live in. #worldpressphoto #everydayafrica #everydaymigration #johannesburg #yeoville #southafrica @everydaymigration @agencynative
